View Full Version : Built in Refugium
Say I wanted to build in a refugium into a 58G tank, what would I need. I would like to get the tank, stand and lighting seperate along with a tunze hob skimmer. But I would rather have a built in refugium for filtration would this be possible? I am thinking outside the box or in this case inside the aquarium.

You could either do an Aqua clear mod and have a HOB fuge or else just a soapdish suction cupped up on the side with cheato(sp?)

If you want it in the tank, just make a little cage and throw in some cheato.
I would think a special section of a sump would be more manageable.

certainly possible, though the effectiveness becomes limited if you don't allow for much algae space.

After thinking about it a bit, if you were to ever build an acrylic tank, a coast to coast overflow/fuge would be pretty sweet. Maybe the outside 1/4's of the tank for overflow and the middle half for a fuge.
You may also be able to put together a makeshift one with silicone and glass. You can get glass cut at hardwares stores to your specs. Since it'll be completely surrounded by water, It wouldn't have to be too strong either. Just enough strength to hold any rubble rock that you decide to throw in there I guess.

I thought about trying the aquaclear idea, but I think the amount of cheato you could use in an aquaclear really won't have much of an effect on a 58

You could get some pieces of that egg crate material and cut some pieces down to make a box, zip tie it together with the cheato in it and figure out a a way to attatch it to the glass either with suction cups or make a hook with like a hanger so it could hook over the top lip of the tank. IDK just a thought.
I did this for a while when I had some livestock in my fuge. I hated it. no matter what I did it looked pretty cheesy and crappy. And I'm one who usually doesn't mind cheesy and crappy.

Is this a RR tank with an overflow? if you you could probably hang a little box for cheato in the overflow. I don't think I'd just let it sit in there though, as it will sink to the bottom and collect detrius.
