Help with heater

I am confused.....My tank runs at 78.9 normally. Today I came home and it was at 74.9 and I have no clue why. I run a dual stage Medusa controller with a 500 watt Aqua Medic on about 120 gallons and it says it is heating, just not sure why it would drop so low? Any Ideas? The dual stage is hooked to a fan and that was obviously not coming on.

Seriously... I would pull the heater and put it into a small bowl of water to see if it is working.
