What do people use for flow in tanks with anemones?

We have a Seio 1500, our sebae is pretty rooted though and hasn't wandered too much.

put a sponge prefilter on the intake of your pumps, that will make them safe.

I'm trying to decide how much flow and what type of pump to use in the 30 gallon that I am setting up. I have to buy a pump for it, not sure what I want to go with for it. Since that is the tank the anemone is going into I want to make it safe from the start. :)

I have an anemone specific 29g tank, two Maxijet 900s with sponge filters on the intake. Gives plenty of flow for my needs. I have the alternating so only 1 on at a time so the the flow goes 1 direction half the day and the other direction the other half. Anemones really seem to like that sweeping flow much better then the coatic crashing of both pumps on a the same time.

Tank has about 13 anemones in it and the roam all the time so it's a must for me. I'll find one sitting on the sponge quite often that would have been toast otherwise.

David, is this tank sumpless and skimmerless?

Yes, it's the only system I have that doesn't have a sump. Reason is with all those anemones they would get stuck or damaged in the overflows. When Ryan had his large prop system for RBTAs up that was the biggest problem so I learned from his experience. Li ( clownnut ) said the same thing too.

It is skimmerless for now. I do 10g water change weekly ( sometimes skip a water change ). It's only been up and running since Christmas. I do have a air driven skimmer that I would add if needed since it would also be anemone friendly.

I have to admit, I've been having fun with the anemone tank. Hopefully at some point it will be a anmeone propagation tank too but first need to get the anemone numbers up.

Alright, Maxi-jets with sponge filters it is. Thanks :) Anyone have any they are looking to get rid of? Maybe I'll have to pick up a couple at SWE on the 26th.

I didn't think about problems with the overflow. But, I think I should be safe. The tank has a false back that has the skimmer and fuge, the overflow is not teethed, it is a plastic piece with slots in it. And, so it does have one pump. Guess, I'll have to wait til I get it running to decide how much more flow I want.

I will have help to move furniture tomorrow. Then I can get some water in it to see what I need to add for flow.

I'm not aware of anywhere local to get the foam sleeves for the MJ. I always get mine from premiumaquatics. 2 of them run about $6. I always keep several extra sets handy so that I can just swap them out and clean later.

Don't underestimat the abilities, If your familar with the very thin slits on a bulkhead strainer and still managed to get 3/4 of the way through one and that's like 1/16". The suction is what really does it.

what about putting cheese cloth over the back of the overflow so that it wouldn't be pulled through?

Hmmmm.....

Do you think cheesecloth will work? I may have to give that a try, I do have some cheesecloth.

I'm hoping that once I put it in the tank it won't move around, but also know it may move around and don't want it to get hurt. It attached itself to rock in the QT tank within an hour of being put in there and has not moved since. When I move it the rock is going with it, hopefully it will stay put.

Good luck. Unfortunately, it's just something you can't predict. I've had them stay in one place for years then just decide to move..... I've got one rose I've have for about 8 years now but that's still a thumb sucker in anemone years.

yeah, it seems like more work than it's worth, especially in a non-species tank where they could leave a swath of destruction.
