Since Southdown Sand is harder to find than a Islamic Leprechaun I was wondering where the best place (pricewise) would be to buy sand. I am looking for the fine aragonite sand.

Also I have about a quarter of a bag of Southdown Sand in my garage. I am assuming it should be rinsed before I put it in my tank, what is the best way to do that?

Barry, I'll be gone for a couple weeks here, but remind me when I get back. I'm going to see if I can get a bunch of sand through my business. I think a need a couple hundred pounds so maybe I can get a bunch???

Hey Barry....I don't know if you saw my response on TRT forum a few weeks back, but I have 2 bags of it that I would trade you if you are interested.

I also have about 40 lbs or so of southdown, I'd love to give it or trade it to someone. I'm most interested in some more base rock or bricks or cinderblocks to turn into base.

Anyone use the Quikrete Commerical Grade Fine Sand at Home Depot? It's not the brown play sand. It's very white and appears to be about .2 -.5 mm. Slightly larger than sugar fine. Anyone do a vinegar test on this stuff before or have any experience with it?

barry, are you the barry who was wanting my southdown? if so, you've still got first dibs. Also, yeah, I had to rinse mine a TON and I still had a lot of gunk get caught by the prefilter. I just put a bunch in a 5 gallon bucket, filled it with water and started agitating it with my hands and such. took a few bucket loads before it started to clear out, but got out most of the finest stuff.

Pity. It's the finest stuff that you want, it has the most surface area per unit mass. The cloudiness will clear within a couple of days.
In the refugium you saw at my place the other day, I used Southdown straight out of the bag. Dumped in as much as I wanted for depth, wet it down with saltwater, and placed a sheet of plastic over it, weighting down the sheet. Then I filled the tank, and slipped the plastic out. Very little cloudiness from the start, and what was there cleared up quickly.

I've heard both sides of this story, people from both sides having pretty fantastic setups, so, though I do understand the surface/size relation, I rinsed b/c I figured with my flow setup a lot of the sand would be constantly kicked up. Maybe next time I won't rinse, who knows. maybe I've just been reading too many conditioner bottles.

I just found out that 3M is going to be selling a substrate that comes in two grades. It was meant to be a roofing granual but turns out that it is perfect for tanks. It is a crushes natural white quarts. Totally inert and looks great. Petland has both grades in one of their new tanks, one on each side, check it out.
