This guy came on my live rock and I've always wondered what it is, never really run across it in my various wanderings. Anybody know what it is?

Is it soft and folds in any time?

It kind of looks like a mushroom or a GBTA??

I'd say fungia

The thing that got me curious about it again is I bumped it with a tool the other day and it went "clink" I always thought it was soft and squishy but it turns out it has a hard middle. In the picture it is fully extened (as much as I have seen) but when I bumped it it was completely hard (no tentacles sticking out, just ridges.

Yep that is my guess.

I guess that is the best fit I've seen too.

All the pics I've seen of fungia, the animal is convex and free standing. This guy has a concave face, and he's attatched to the rock. If not for those two features, I would have just called it a fungia.

Thanks guys

I agree...it's a plate coral. If it ends up being a rhizo I have first dibs...lol

I'm guessing plate as well, babies are attached to rock and drop off as they grow, I have a similar one on the back of a brain coral skeleton, mine's green with purple.

This guy is about 4yrs old and the size of a nickel. I don't know for sure but I think he's all grown up.

man, its so hard to know. there is so much life in the ocean its nuts:nuts: neat little thing though. If Capman ever comes on the boards he would probably be able to give you a more specific answer than any of us could.
