I just got in a new RO/DI unit, and I've been letting it run for about an hour and a half, and the water has this funny taste to it. I'm pretty sure that this is not normal, and am wondering how long I can expect this to last.

Thanks,
Phil

Do you have a tds meter? Pure RODI water will have absolutelly no taste what soever.

I do not have a tds meter. I used to live with someone that had a ro unit, and it was wonderful, that's why I'm wondering if I need to just let it run for a while longer. I was also thinking that maybe, something is getting through, like chloromine. I know that that is what they treat the tap water with, and I'm not sure if it would be removed.

It is possible chloromine is getting through but I would let it run a day or so and if it is still there contact Fahz (jim) at the filter guys and he has the solution for chloromine problems.

they say not to drink di water, to tee it b4 the di, and drink the water not passing through the di. my ro/di water tastes a little funny too.

Yes drinking DI water will deplete your electrolytes and wear down your enamel on your teeth. I have tried it and it I guess it does taste funny, but it tasted funny to me as it has no taste to me. Where normal water has a refreshing taste RODI had not refreshing value to me at all.

that could be the cells in your mouth popping. The difference in osmolarity can cause the cell to take up too much water and burst.

Check the TDS of a bottle of "spring water" from the store. It's probably close to or near zero. My point? Drinking RO water or RO/DI (which I wouldn't drink just because I don't think the DI resin is made for drinking), won't deplete your electrolytes any more than drinking a bottle of water from the store. Now, if you only drank water and didn't eat anything, any type of water would deplete your electrolytes. Just eat a bag of chips and you'll be golden. :)

If we're not supposed to drink DI water, how come we give it to our fish?

You add salt back to it

To drink water from your filter, you should split off for DI only to your tank water. No sense wasting the DI. Your final stage for drinking water should be a cocunut carbon filter for taste.

Typically there is a published water chart for your municipal water that will report if they use chlorimine. If so, you will require a special carbon prefilter to remove it.

Jim at filterguys.biz has all the stuff I mention........
