When I first got my rock, this was on it:

Whatever it was, I figured it was dead, totally white and hard. After I got my halide and rearranged the rocks so that it was exposed and not in the dark, it started growing.

Now it is this:

It has polyps but there is no extension in the pics. I was just cleaning the glass making a mess to take the pic and I think the anemone that lives on the other side of the rock is bothering it.

Any idea what it is? Give the small polyps, is it some sort plating SPS?

Looks like a leather of some sort

Most definitely not a leather. Its hard and it has small polyps on it.

well if it is not leathery, I am going to guess it could possibly be a pectina? Does it have ridges on it?

Hmmm. I've never heard of a pectina coral. From the one pic I could find on google - maybe. So far it doesn't really have ridges, but it is still quite small - maybe 1/2" x 1".

It doesn't yet have any upward protrusions, but again, its small still. I'll watch for something like that to devlope in the coming months.

i have nearly the same thing that came on my rock. It is slowly showing some red and green. I want to move it to some better lighting but right now the rock is trapped. I need to set my fuge up to get some rock out of the display so i have more room to focus on the corals that are attached that were hitchhikers that i have found over time. If i knew they were there when setting up the would have been located better.

jake/fastfish discovery aquatics. my piece also has two mouths or polyps i believe but that area still is in recovery. this was exactly how your started white and looking dead but now i check on it all the time because i think it has great potential.
