Cyno problem

My tank has been up and running for almost 2 years. I have never had any problem with Cyno. I have been doing the same for feeding, water changes(every 4-6 weeks) and 2 part the whole time. All of a sudden I have a cyno outbreak.

Things that could have caused it:
1. increased my flow a little in the tank which pushed some sand around more than normal
2. I need new MH lights. They are about a year old. Have them, haven't put them in yet.
3. haven't changed my carbon in my sump for 2 months.
4. been 8 months since I changed the filters in my RO/DI

Any suggestions on what could be the problem??

to the best of my knowledge, carbon cannot cause the cyno, and dont think it does anything to fight it, its more of a water polisher and perfume for the tank i think. Whatever is holding the carbon tho (sump sock?) can be a bad bacteria farm.

The lights may be the issue, i dont do MH, so i dont know their lifespan, bulbs at the end of their cycle produce a lower lumen level which is more ideal for any algae, i would think youd get hair and/or green algae firstt ho no?

change your filters! change mine every 6 months.. dunno if thats average.

I believe its your lighting as well. Not only it could produce less par but also increase UV exposure which can grow funky stuff in your tank including some form of cyano.

Also I would get a TDS meter and check were your PPM is with your R/O output. Typically if your around 8ppm its time to change it and possibly the membrane too.

As for not changing the Carbon, it can affect your overall water quality since it can collect and clog crudd and release back into your system which can result in increase in Po3 which Algae feeds on.

Typically Carbon is exhausted in a week or 2 and leaving it in there is more harm than good. I actually stop using Carbon due to me being to lazy changing it every 2 wks.

Thanks you 2. I thought is was a combination of all the things that I listed in the first post and I may be right. Going to change filters, carbon and lights.

I just also had a cyano outbreak. I was relying on my TDS meter on my RODI, and got a "schooling" from Li at SWE. That was just last week and I did a few quick water changes after the new filters and DI. It seems to be better after 1 week. I would start with filters

forgot to mention, make sure you have tested using the TDS meter before DI and After *so it should be connected to 2 sections*

make sure you purchase the "DUAL" TDS version. So you can connect before and after the DI unit. Should run around $30 last I checked...BRS has'em possibly SWE call first.

Thats where I will be getting my filters so I will pick a DUAL TDS up as well.
