Hello Bob! I have been thinking of getting a pair of these. Is their a trick to getting a male and female?

My wife would take a lot more interest in the hobby if I could breed some Banggai

There is a physical identifier with Bangaii Cardinalfish, so getting a pair is relatively easy to do.
You can see the different in Google image results. The male has identifiable protrusions under the belly; fin rays or such. When selecting your fish, just look at their bellies.

Having a breeding pair is fun to watch. Their courtship and brooding behavior should pique the interest of your wife.
I have some video of my pair of Bangaii Cardinalfish during their courtship in my Fluval build thread. If you watch that, you could gauge the level of her interest before purchasing a pair.

I have a pair, by luck I guess. I bought each one from different Petco stores, and they have gotten along great. The one holds the eggs, and doesn't eat for a couple of weeks. I have no way of catching the fry, suddenly he is eating again. Mine seem to stay in the middle of thank, in a lot of rocks. Good luck in finding a pair.
