Kate, I noticed something in your MBI report that made me come back, wanting to mention something. Did you really use RotiGrow Plus as the greenwater for this larval rearing? Is that what you always do with your clowns?

I ask, because RotiGrow Plus isn't designed for use in Greenwater Larviculture applications and several of us, early on, tried it and found it would kill our larvae, somewhat depending on dosage and larval age.

While I honestly have to say that based on my own experiences, RotiGrow Plus wouldn't have been a problem until 3-4 days out, if you used it hear as the geenwater, it is certainly possible that it caused issues for you.

One other tidbit on all the RotiGrow System Pastes - defrost in the fridge. A slow thaw works better and, I'm now paraphrasing, it prevents clumping of the algal cells from occurring.

Oooh really? I had not heard that about RotiGrow plus. :mad_3: That is what I used for greenwater. I have been having trouble with entire batches dying early on lately. The thought that it was my paste crossed my mind. I looked at it under a microscope but couldn't see anything wrong with it, but I'm the exact opposite of an algae expert.

I don't freeze any pastes. I manage to go through a 1 liter bag or split it with other locals so that I never reach the refrigeration shelf life. Whenever I use frozen paste the clumping makes my rotifers almost crash so I avoid it.

Looks like I'm going back to plain old Nanno paste. Is that what you use?

Edit: I re-read Matt's Darwin journal and see he used RotiGreen. Reed's product line is a bit confusing.

WOHOO! I get another chance! The laid another clutch last night. Weird thing is it was laid after lights out. I fed them at 9pm and lights go out at 9:30p. There was no nest at 9, but I could tell they were ready. Tank temp was bumped up this time so maybe development will be shorter than 10 days.

Haha that is what I thought too. I'll be curious to see if the male was able to fertilize them all.

BAH! Cursed timing! I had my baby on Tuesday and missed most of the hatch (Wednesday night 8/24). Got home and there are about 30 unhatched today and I caught 3 more out of the broodstock tank. We'll see if I can salvage a partial hatch. Dang...thats like 125+ fry I lost.

Resting? We moms leave that to the men :gay1: I feel good though. I had this baby "by water" too (a.k.a. waterbirth) so he's already a born reefer!

Congrats to you too denneed! The first baby is quite a learning experience!

LOL! Congrats Kate! You're so awesome!!! I feel like this should be documented for your child to read some day...

"I had you a couple hours ago, but I am totally bummed because I got home too late from the hospital and now I missed my clown-fish's 307th spawning... rats."

(BTW, our clowns and RBTA are doing great, thank you again!)

Keep up the hard work though. I'm pulling for you!

LOL! That cracked me up. A little truth there though!

I salvaged a fair number, maybe a couple dozen larvae. This time I used RotiGreen Nanno instead of RotiGrow plus for greenwater. They aren't dead yet so that must have been the problem. Thanks Matt!

A warm reefing welcome to the new addition. :goldfish:

Our false clowns are tending their latest clutch. Expected hatching next Sat, Sept 3rd...only if you really really want more little ones to tend right now ;).

Babies everywhere here! My other pair of black and white clowns spawned for the 1st time tonight! 3 years of patience... I wonder if it has anything to do with the algae turf scrubber I put on their tank.

Settlement has started on the 16 or so I salvaged from the 2nd clutch. Hatch day 7 I believe which seems a little early compared to others' experiences with this species.

I have been doing daily 80-90% water changes with temp adjusted, newly mixed saltwater. I add rotifers and greenwater as necessary.

WOOT! Another clutch laid last night! I have probably 400 eggs between the two nests! It's going to be an exciting week!

    400 eggs... Nice!

I must have bad luck with rotifers... Both rotifer buckets crashed about 6 days later after I got them from you... Don't know what I'm doing wrong here... Time to grab frozen rotifers instead...

    Good luck
