Id get a goldfish tank in a jiffy but with rock still sitting around and nemo being the same color

Still have a lot of Cree leds (well enough for a 40 br), so whats the word - aye or naye?
Oh and a skimmer - needed? nemo errrr clownfish plus anemone plus zoos plus palys plus leathers plus more softies is the thought (although a nano calcium reactor is handy too )

Sounds like you've already made up your mind!
A goldfish doesn't stand a chance against a soft coral reef with an anemone and a pair of clownfish.

There's so much you can do in small tanks nowadays.
The industry has definitely catered to the smaller and more manageable side of the hobby in recent years. From AIO tanks to smaller sized filtration and lighting fixtures, it's quite easy to find what you need for a small system.
Even the livestock for smaller systems has expanded quite a bit. The selection of smaller fish (heck, the variations in designer clownfish is huge) and inverts is growing by the year.

    So, yes.... go Nemo.
    And welcome back!!!

The kids trumped the mom - so its a salty 40br (for now). Ive been out for long enough to ask -
    - Skimmer on a small softy setup: pros?
    - LEDs - standard fare from when I remember CW, NW WW, Actinic Blue, Violet/UV. Red/green needed?

BTW - the goldfish tank is going to be atleast 100Gallons but outdoors :) In my book its an equal opportunity fish. maybe a planted tank will follow but theres enough gardening already

no room for a large tank, yet. working on options none of which are nice on the pocket.

I would say the DIY LED setups are still similar to what they were a couple years ago. Just copy some of the mainstream fixtures. But yeah, RB, Blue, NW, Violet 410-430mm. Red and green - still personal preference. If I were to do another I would certainly put some diffusion sheet on it to help the spread and blending. https://www.inventables.com/technologies/light-diffuser-films

    Have fun!

That is what I have above my 28. Works well for me, but I'm not a coral guru by any means. I have a couple that I plan to use on a 40BR. If it was an SPS tank I'd probably think about 2 of them, if a softy just one would probably work. FWIW, JMHO.
