Background...

I started keeping a freshwater oscar back in 2000. After keeping other fresh water fish, I decided to take the plunge and start a saltwater tank in Jan 2007. I started out with a 10 gallon tank, fake corals, HOB filter, and a yellow tail blue damsel. After many changes, my current marine nano has live rock and both hard and soft corals. The yellow tail blue damsel is still in the tank, for now.

My Current Tank...

My current tank is a 20 gallon long. It sits on our kitchen island above our sink and is viewable from 3 sides. For lighting, I use 3 24” HO T-5 with individual SLR reflectors. These are cooled with a super quiet pc fan that blows air lengthwise down the bulbs. I use a Tunze 9002 Nano Skimmer that hides nicely inside the tank. All the equipment has to be unobtrusive, since it is all contained inside the tank. I keep a mix of hard and soft corals and a red bubble tip anemone as well. I keep the anemone at one end of the tank, and haven’t had any problems with him walking yet! I started off collecting zoanthids from various club members. After getting two LPS, a frogspawn, and a torch, I find myself getting more and more hard corals. I currently have a mix of LPS and some starter SPS. With time, I’m hoping to get more colorful SPS in my tank. In the future, I’m also hoping to add a Neptune AquaContoller Jr. The controller would remove a few manual timers and add some redundancy to the heating of the tank.

Water Flow...

With no sump, all water flow is provided by two powerheads.  One is a MJ 900 on a timer that turns it on or off every 30 mins.  The other is a Hydor Koralia 1 that provides around 400 gph of flow.  If I don’t aim the powerheads up slightly, I get plenty of sand movement.

Water Supply...

Top-off water is provided by a DIY water reservoir feeding with an IV drip set.  I’ve found that 1 drip every 3 seconds keeps up with the evaporation.  Lately I’ve been adding Kalk to the top-off to keep up with alk and calcium requirements.
