just curious if this is anything i'd need to be worried about...

the other day, a few of my Zoas started looking a little strange..
i'm kind of having a cyano bloom which has for the most part stayed off rocks and corals, and is just in the sand, but these zoas were on the sand bet and looked like they might have a little on them, not sure if that'd cause this, I GENTLY scraped the stuff off, (it was only on one polyp, and scraped is maybe too strong of a word, but you know... )

anyway, Just wondering if anyone would know what might be causing this. there was also something that looked like it could possibly be a very very tiny worm or something attached to one of the polyps, but it was way too small to get a photo of and might have just been something else. I removed that when I removed the bit of cyano.

they're a little bit more closed now than they were before, because they kind of closed up when I was taking the cyano off, but what i'm specifically referring to is how one area of the skirt looks kind of pinched. I've got some Bam Bams and those are fully open and looking beautiful.

If the cyano needs to be taking off them again, instead of scraping or rubbing it all you need to do is take like a turkey baster and blow it off.

I have 3 frags that look just like yours. Watermelons? I've had them for about 3 months and they do the same thing. Sometimes they are completely closed and then they open up and look just fine. Also last week I noticed that one of them just decided to hop off the plug it was on and attach it's self to a piece of LR. Go figure?

yep, they're watermelons. Mine actually fell off their frag plug a couple days after I put them in the tank (still attached to a little rock though) so I just glued them back on...

So is it cyno that is making that brownish film?

I just picked up a zoa frag that has the same thing going on.

Would a bit more directed water current help keep it clear?

could be a number of things I guess..., I think that was the case with mine, but with yours, it might be something different. more current in the area where you're seeing it can never hurt though

I'm hoping i can get some more help in this thread on a new issue that's happening with the watermelons now though.

Not sure what this is, don't think i've really seen anything like it before on my corals, so i'm just looking to get some opinions... the zoas (pictured next to the bam bams for size reference) seem to be dying, or something. This just started happening maybe a week ago at most. Gave them an iodine dip this morning because i don't have any of the fancy dippin' chemicals yet, the stuff that looks kinda white on the end closest to the camera is what used to be baby polyps...

I know you where playing around with pumps a while back.. are they in an area where flow might have changed? I can't see anything on them that would upset them. I remember when I had a frag of zoo's just melt away for no reason I was told 'sometimes they just do that' by a very experianced zoo keeper.

flow should be about the same, could be a bit lower because I took the maxi jet out of the front of the tank (where it was being used as a powerhead) and replaced the return pump (with hydor flow attached) with a mj1200, so the flow is different, but i don't know if it really went down (or possibly up in that area) much. but yeah, I didn't see anything that looked like a parasite on them or anything

Zoas and Mushrooms both like dirty water.... and yes sometimes they just melt. You'll figure out down the road what you can keep and what just vanishes. I wouldn't drive yourself too crazy over what you aren't able to keep and enjoy the things you are.

I have/had some zoas do the same thing. They started doing that, almost melted away completely, then started to come back again out of nowhere. I wouldn't worry too much.

alright, so it sounds like i should just... not do anything? Lol. that's easy enough. I've had the watermelons since the frag swap so its kind of sad to see that happening if that's just the way it is, but everything else seems to be doing alright , so I guess i'll just leave it be
