Woke up from a nap today to a couple pms about icecap.... Doesn't nessacarily give me my peace of mind I'm shooting for.... So I'm kinda feeling I'm back to square 1 here with lighting.. I really liked the fact they had leds mixed in with the t5s.... I may just bite the bullet and go straight leds for this build now.... I really liked that tank that could make the thunderstorms... Just a cool added feature.... Back to browsing other possibilities

Thunderstorms? VIDEO ;)

What type of coverage do thoes units give... I'm guessing I would need 9-12 or am I underestimating the light spread ( if there is any spread from leds)

The issue is your tank will be very wide and you would need to cover 72" almost twice. That's really going to be a lot of modules...

And that's why I haven't looked into leds for this build..... To get the real nice ones I'd be looking at 10k+..... Sigh..... May have to pm ray about thoes reefbrights

What is with the ATI "dimmable" fixtures?
If I wouldn't mind the light spread around the tank I would have chosen for those. Those are controllable with the Profilux and would give you a lot of scenarios also

Back on the t5 kick.... Teks are good fixtures and I can get 24 bulbs for less than 20 bulbs with the ati fixture... I can use the extra $ I'd save on the lights twards an even bigger skimmer

Just offering other options. It sounded like you had a preference for the ATI.

Myself - been there, done that, and T5's just don't do it for me. With as deep a tank as you are planning, I'd probably do 4x400 HQI in good reflectors and a handful of T5's for supplementation and dawn/dusk.

Lightening mode sounds like an interesting gimmick to play with once or twice but not something worth spending money.

I would not do LEDs. Just take a look at Rachel's thread. These fixtures are not yet ready to last in the long term. You are talking about serious money which I would not spend on LEDs at this time.

While I will admit, I haven't thought about running mh just for the simple fact there will only be a few select sps.... Mh just are not nessacary.... I wish kvmn would post here and let me know "why" he choose the ati fixture over the others

With a 24" height 250watts would be plenty. Also I would go with the MH's and T5's for supplements... I would run 4-250watt MH's with lumenbright large reflectors. Run the T5's along the outside rim and through the center.

Just an idea.

Kvmn is out of the hobby I think. He sold off months ago. He may check his pms or may have his number listed.

Woah! I get busy for a few days and this thread took off. I thought the last time I talked to you, you were saying only a 24" tall tank. Now you're at 30"....what'd I miss?

Also, with T5's (at least on a 24" deep tank) they would have been more than bright enough to keep almost anything you want.

You are having a center overflow on your tank now? Will that be obtrusive at all? or are you going to aquascape almost a volcano look to the center of the tank? (or did you mean center of the back)? With a tempered glass tank - as I'm sure you already know - make sure you're absolutely positive on bulkhead placement because after it's tempered there's nothing you can change!

I might give you a call tomorrow to catch up on your thoughts/decisions...

Lol I contemplated 30" for a day or 2.... Like really comtemplated it... But I did realise at that depth mh were going to be a necessity.... I don't want to run metal halides... So I'm back to 24" in height.... The only equipment I still tossing and turning on are what skimmer to go with.... Tunze or bubble king, and the lights.... Do I go (3) tek 8 bulbs or 2 ati 10 bulbs or ( If I find a supplier) 3 ati 8 bulbs...... Otherwise I'm pretty much set on the rest of the equipment..
