I have another question, how often do most people work on their plumbing?

Is it common to have a small leak somewhere, or anything once a year or so?

Also, if you did have say a leak in one of the pipes, would you drain the entire tank first? Or just the overflows?

Once in place and properly glued the pipes should never leak. Bulkheads can sometimes develop leaks.

Also I noticed that you went with the clear vinyl tubing for the return line. Personally I would have gone with black vinyl tubing instead of clear because the clear can grow algae. Just my opinion.

Clear will be fine unless a fuge or lighting is on extended periods of time under the tank.

Then the algae will grow :(

Ok, I just finished the plumbing, not the cleanest setup, but this is my first time.

I have one question, how do I start the syphon? Just turn on the pump, and it will happen automatically?

Here's some pics.

Ok I got the sump started. And I have another leak on the other side. On the return from the tank to the sump.

I ordered two bulkheads and only put in one. Now I'm going to put in the other one. Which means this jerk craigslister sold me a tank with 4 leaks total.

No wonder he had it in the drive way waiting for me, and I thought he was being nice.

Ok, here's a serious problem. Right at the bulkhead, ther is a crack in the tank, starting from the bulkhead going down and left in the picture. It's hard to see, but you should be able to make it out.

Is that ok if it doesn't leak?

Is it too risky and needs to be repaired?

Is it un fixable and the tank is ruined?

Does anyone need more information or more pictures to determine how serious the problem is ?

I wouldn't risk a blow out. I know it sucks, but I would junk the tank. When buying used equipment it's very important you always check it twice for problems.

Thanks, so far, my plans are to drain the tank, smash it, throw it in the trash, and chalk it off to lesson learned.

Although I am going to file in small claims court, I'll try my luck their, and if I win, great, if not, oh well.

He said everything works fine, and Cearly he sold the tank and with-held the truth

You could patch it if you want though. If it was ME I wouldn't risk it however. It's all your choice.

How exactly do you patch it?

Right now it holds water with the overflows empty.

What if it holds water just fine with everything running ? Is it a ticking time bomb?

I wouldnt risk 125gl blow out in your home. thats a lot to clean up. If it wos me i'd drain the tank, smash it, and throw it on the mans front yard but thats just me :poke:

I'm really sorry this turned out so badly for you. I wouldn't risk putting water in it, if that crack gave it would be a nightmare.

I suppose, it would be a nightmare. Wood floors ruined, sougy walls, everything.

Can I ask, how many people right now, are running a tank with a crack, or a repair job! If it's almost nobody, then fine, I'm pulling the plug, smash an throw away and fuggit.

Smash it. Sorry to say not worth the risk. You wont find probably anyone on here with a cracked tank that is running. If they are running one, it could happen anytime! I would just get a new tank or another used. Make sure to check it over completely before buying.

Also in small claims you will not win considering there is no proof that you didn't crack it or if it was cracked when you bought it. I dealt alot in small claims before. You can try but not really worth it. Good luck.

Well, consider me a noob. $60 wasted in bulkheads, plus $250 wasted in a cracked tank. Consider this a $310 loss !
