I'm excited, I just picked up a new Nikon D3100 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Kit at National Camera Exchange for my wife as a Christmas present. :greenguy:

Really, its for the wife :beerchug:

She really wants one, nevermind that I'll finally be able take decent pictures of the tanks :)

Its taken a bit for me to understand just the basics of DSLR and the new camera. I was never even good with a point and shoot and all of the concepts of photography are entirely new. I welcome any and all advice. I'm finding this to be a really enjoyable new part of the hobby.

This is honestly the first picture I've been able to take I felt was good enough to share. I don't have a tripod so I just stack some books on the couch next to the tank and set a 2 second delay. Oh, and I've just started reading about white balance which has been giving me some problems taking shots under the Radion LED's. This photo was just set to Auto white balance and no post processing was done.

ISO 100
1/2 sec.
f/10
38mm

Its a 54 gallon corner tank and the rounded glass doesn't help from a photography perspective. I also didn't take the time to clean the glass well or stop the pumps for this shot. Hoping maybe this weekend to get an actual photo session done with everything setup right :beerchug:

Nice! try using a tripod and going with a higher ISO if needed.

No outside shots yet. I so wish we would have had this camera for the trip to South Dakota this summer though :beerchug:

The only time I regret having a corner tank is when I try to take pictures through the rounded glass.

Some candy apple reds I picked up recently, thanks Anurag, love them :beerchug:

I'm looking to pickup a used Tamron 90mm lens at some point. If you see one around let me know.

I have the NIKON d7000 and just got the tamron 90mm macro two weeks ago. I love it!

The biggest quality improvement I found was to make sure I was photographing straight through the glass. Any slight angle totally messed with the clarity.

sps seem to be doing well

Was wondering how these would do under the radions and in a system that I have chosen not to run a skimmer on yet.

Orange Diji seems to be keeping its color well. I broke the right half of this off and super glued it back together, you can kinda see the white.

Orange Monti Cap (January 29th) Sorry it was a bad picture...

Today (February 26) It is getting fatter for sure, can't really tell if it is getting much bigger.

The color hasn't really changed as much as the pictures show. In fact, the color really looks more like this top down shot I took today.

Just out of curiosity this orange cap doesn't really look like any pictures I've ever seen. It seems to have a lot more polyp flesh? on it. Is this normal?

Still my favorite coral :beerchug:

And growing like crazy.

On a side note, here is a mini review on a lens. I've been shooting some of these pictures with a very old 55mm lens I picked up for 100 bucks.

I have to decide if I'd like to keep it or return it to National Camera before the 30 days ends. Although it is a very nice lens for the money I'm thinking that it just isn't cutting it for taking the tank shots I want. I'd like something that can do 1:1 and bringing it back would be 100 bucks closer to a tamron 90mm.

I have really enjoyed hooking this old lens up to the 3100 body and learning to shoot in complete manual mode. It has been a real learning experience and I think even if I take the lens back I'll be a better photographer for having used it.

Liking the new extension tubes :fish:
