.Marshall's Saltwater Experience (75g Display + 37g Frag) (1 Viewer)

Salinity: 1.028
Phosphates: ----- Not sure didn't test, last test was .08 ppm
Ammonia: ~1.00 ppm
Nitrites: 0.00 ppm
Nitrates: 0.00 ppm

Is there anything I should be doing to start seeing Nitrite? Add a couple more raw shrimp to add more ammonia? Or will it run its course slowly but surely..

P.s. I am running GFO, should I not be doing this? What role do Phosphates play when cycling?

No, and if there are any rotting shrimp in there, you can pull them out.

There are things like Prodibio and Stability that you can add to jump start the cycle if you want.

I have some Bio-Spira I bought off BRS, but pretty sure that is to be used at the end of the cycle.. not sure though going to check it out and possibly dump that in there

I have decided to return my Tunze's and go Vortech, the Tunze's sure are quiet but the eyesore in the tank and the un-user friendly Multicontroller (7096) that never seemed to work right even with Tunze technical support did it for me. I had a 6095 and a 6055 and I will going with 2 Mp10wes Should be enough flow, considering I dont have that much rock.
 
I'm not sure it will be enough for a 75. I had a pair of MP10s on a 57 that was 3' long. You may find a few dead spots.

FWIW, I dumped the vortechs and went back to Tunze. Too much noise and ugly warts on the outside of the tank.
 
As long as you have ammonia, the nitrates will come. Just be patient.

Me personally, I wouldn't run GFO at this time. No lights either so algae won't grow ( unless your using fully cured LR ). Ideally when the cycle is over you want to do as near 100% water change as possible. This is becuase the nitrate level will rise from the cycle. You want nitrates as close to zero before you add livestock to ward off algae phase the best possible. Once your fully done cycle and have done a big water change, then you can add the GFO.

Added Bio-Spira yesterday when I tested and there were no nitrites AgAiN so I added it early yesterday, tested this morning and this was the result pretty happy about it :)

Salinity: 1.028
Phosphates: .07 ppm
Ammonia: 1.00 ppm
Nitrites: 1.00 pp
Nitrates: 15 ppm
 
and fish are in! They're doing great, still some adverse trace amounts of nitrite which I hope go away asap. Otherwise everything tests in good parameters.

Still have the Tunze in the tank until either my Mp40 I purchased used on Reef2Reef arrives or the Mp10 I'm ordering from BRS tomorrow during the group buy arrives then the Tunze and the Multicontroller shall be returned!

If you had ammonia of 1 yesterday, why are you adding fish and corals today?

Also, I'm curious who will accept used pumps back as a return. I always thought if you used them they were yours (unless they failed or something).

Aye, the ammonia spike is part of the cycle, should wait until it drops back to 0. Generally takes about a month for a "full" cycle. Is the new livestock having labored breathing?
 
From my understanding, you're supposed to wait until ammonia and nitrites were at zero, then do a huge water change, then add livestock.

I added Bio-Spira Thursday? I believe? Ammonia started to drop, Nitrites started to rise and peak and without anything for the bio-spira to feed on I figured the cycle would die out. So I went to SWE yesterday at 4pm and got the tang, clown, and zoa.

After reading the instructions for the Bio-Spira and reading up on some threads about using Bio-Spira I made the decision to add the fish.

Bio-spira says add Bio-Spira and then add fish right away, I read up on it and saw something about a 48 hour deadline? Anyway, theres my alibi! lol

Livestock are perfect, acclimated them last night and checked them this afternoon before work and they were swimming all over the aquarium (the tang stayed in the back corners most of last night) so that was nice to see them checking out their new digs.

Hopefully it works out for you. They require the product to be returned in "as-new" condition. They very well could refuse the return since these pumps are pretty much used as this point and not "as-new".
