We have a few ideas for workshops, but these ideas really only stem from a few people's thoughts.

We want to get an idea of what our members would like to see, learn, and participate in for future workshops.

These workshops should be learning experiences, something to help our members out in the hobby. Be it through making nutritious food, providing ideal living models in aquascaping, even learning proper QT practices or medicating practices. How about a rock nuking workshop... anyone out there need some rock cleaned up and not sure how... or not sure if they want to try it alone?

The Event Committee wants to get some ideas so we can better focus on workshops that people will benefit from. So please shoot some ideas out there, let us know some things you have been wanting to learn how to do, or some things you have wanted to do but havent had the time or courage to try it yourself. Odds are if one of our members is interested in something, many more are as well and just arent speaking up!

Even if the idea seems ridiculous, spit it out! You never know what we can morph into a workshop.....

Nuts and bolts SPS workshop covering:
-Reactors
-Water Additives
-Water Quality
-Types of Media
-Lighting
-Flow

What about a breeder's workshop?

Since I (and I'm sure other members) couldn't make it to the MBI Workshops, would it be possible for Chad (Vossen) and/or Matt (Pederson) give a small presentation join the basics for starting a breeding program?
Seeing that many members have a current interest in breeding and raising marine fish, I would think a workshop that discussed the basics would be a great help; setting up a breeding system, culturing algae and live foods, grow out systems and other basic information. (Save all of the details and big words for Tal's workshop.)

I know that since my clownfish had spawned this spring, I would be interested in learning a little bit more about what it would take to raise fish; not that I would become a breeder, but for the knowledge of breeding fish.
And since my son (HS sophomore) is planning on studying marine biological sciences, it would be a good step for him to get started early.

I could do something on the biology of some of the critters in our tanks. Maybe on the various worms and crustaceans that frequently live in reef tanks, on the anatomy and biology of sponges, or on any number of other things. I have only vague ideas for themes at the moment, but there is plenty I could talk about (I teach invertebrate biology every few years), and this would likely include video clips and could be supplemented with viewing live critters under microscopes in the lab. I'd probably want to do this at some time when classes are not in session, when I'd have a little more time to pull things together.

An acrylic workshop

I do like this one, we have had it on our list for awhile.

What item would you like for us to build at the workshop? a fish trap, acclimation box, top down viewer?

most likely we wouldnt be able to do all of the above due to supply cost and our presenter would need to be able to focus on one instruction set so he could help people along.

Essentially you would like more of a speaker event encompassing the do's, dont's and everything inbetween on SPS corals?

We could talk to Matt about coming down and doing something for us, he is usually willing provided he has the time. Im sure we could convince Chad to be a part of it as well... he might require us to supply doughnuts and soda pop though. We will look into doing something like this, we havent had a good aquaculture focused event in awhile.

i sense the makings of a speaker event starring local minds.

I will be in touch with you, thanks for offering your time

I'd just like to learn proper bonding techniques for different build situations, so whatever is easiest for the presenter to coordinate to build is fine by me. I'd be happy just learning to bond scrap pieces, when to use capillary vs pins, and tool selection & setup.

Not exactly a full blown step by step, but more of an outline, with focus on this, this and this. Once you've got these down then start with something else. More of a practical keeping of SPS, aimed at keeping them healthy in a reef tank. (Although an event that was focused on a pure SPS system and what is needed would be nice too :)

How about an acrylic workshop where you pay a certain $ for acrylic supplies for one of the three things that will be built. Like a fish trap, acc box, or skimmer stand. Then at the workshop maybe rent a saw from HD with a good acrylic saw. Allow individuals to cut acrylic and then glue together one of the three items. Allows someone to learn and take home one of the items.

I like the idea of an acrylic workshop, but I would also like to see a glass aquarium being built, or at least a very small version of 1, it could even be a 6x6x6 tall cube, just to give us an idea what we need to do.

I like this idea as well, it gives us all a chance to build something and get a good understanding.

Like a reefing 101?
