Surprise, Another SPS Tank (1 Viewer)

Got her installed and running at 38w to match the turnover from the Tunze 1073.040 (~300gph w/ head pressure) and it’s dead silent. Now I’m looking at my AC powered BK Mini 160 that makes the other 50% of the vibration noise but I can’t justify replacing that as its brand new. Maybe when it dies in 10 years?

Took the BK out for it‘s first full cleaning, and wow what a pleasure! Everything comes completely apart without feeling like you’re going to break it.

4 happy fish from Reef Collective just graduated quarantine and integrated with no issues. I was concerned the blennies would offer a welcoming beating but none occurred.

2 Biota Rainford Gobies
Biota Filefish
McCoskers Flasher Wrasse

Very nice! I’m getting a similar batch of fish at the end of the month. How are the court jesters with taking to foods?

They were the first ones going or pellets in quarantine! I’ve read wild ones are tough and have poor survival so I was happy to see captive ones are available.

Ok fine update thanks to Keenan!

1 of the court jesters and the filefish didn’t make it. Someone bit I huge chunk out of the goby and filefish got comfy on the side of an MP40 😭. Also my Midas BLenny I’ve had for about 4 years mysteriously died. Turns out he was the low key bully so now the goby and wrasse are much more swimmy!

Tank is starting to hit it‘s stride. Unfortunately so is the bubble algae. AWC has benefits and in my case one of those is that it allows bubble algae to thrive unchecked from manual removal during regular WC. I’ve gone back to manual WC 7 gal weekly hoping to get ahead of it.

I foolishly tried CO2 scrubbing again as the tank suffers from lower pH- 7.8- 8.1. This lead me to bottom out phosphate from the big jump in pH and consumption. Coupled with the fact even 2 canisters online the first one had to be changed every couple days which does not work for my situation, thus causing greater inconsistency. Lost my big Hawkins and Flashlight colonies I’ve had since I got back into the hobby like 7 years ago. They made it through 3 moves and 2 tank upgrades. So, lesson learned.

Even though my only method of filtration is a big skimmer, I still have a hard time maintaining nutrients. Probably from a tank full of stony coral and rampant bubble algae. I have started dosing 2ml daily of neophos and this has been keeping me in the .03-.05ppm range and everything seems to be much happier.

Pictures in the next post in case I break the website.

I struggle with bubble algae as well and manually remove it every couple months or so. I shutoff the return pump but leave the powerheads on with foam guards on them and go to town on the BA. The BA then gets trapped on the foam guards and when they get full I put a net over them and remove, rinse off, put back on and repeat until there's none left floating around. Much easier than a needle or whatever rubberbanded to a siphon IMO.

I used to worry about my ph but like you can't be bothered to keep up with the CO2 scrubbing and replacing so I just went with an airline from outside to my skimmer. It helps a little but nothing significant. Overall I just stopped worrying about chasing ph

Would love to see some pics!

My biggest issue with bubble algae was that my emerald crab got hungry once I put in Vibrant and all the bubble algae vanished. If you haven't tried it, might be worth looking at.

Yeah I’ve heard success stories but also horror stories and I love my corals too much to risk it.

Killed most of my bubble algae, but after using it my tank gets this weird red fuzz algae everywhere and my corals are stressed. I wont be using it again. I have it in both of my systems, but it is only present in 1. My purple tang eats it like crazy in my big tank, and foxface eats it in the frag tank, but nothing really touches it in my red sea tank.

Some overgrown corals- anyone know how to make Space Invader not grow into a continually larger blob??

That space invader is so cool! One of my favorite LPS of all time. Mine hardly grows at all

For me the whole thrill of Pectinia is the continually growing blob, HA!
Awesome coral and tank!

Thanks for the kind words friends!

On today’s list:
-chop up that orange digi. It’s base is getting taken over by vermatid snails and many branches are dead from the space invader
-install my Avast kalk reactor and program. It’s the programming part I’m dreading. I want to run the kalk overnight and run 2 part during the day so I have to do all kinds of special lines in fusion for this.

Update:

-Pulled the Kalk reactor. It did well for pH but caused havoc with stability. I could not get consistent alk so to heck with it.

-Drilled a hole in the side of my house and ran a 1/2” hose through the basement and up my cold air return to the tank. pH has been consistent 8.1 at night and 8.3 during the day since.

Other than that tank is dialed on autopilot. Some pics:
