Surprise, Another SPS Tank (1 Viewer)

Trying something new. Supposed to be the cleanest mix out there and Triton results with every batch. If bought in the bags it’s only a couple Pennie’s more a gallon than Red Sea and I’m SOOO tired of the brown sludge in my mixing container and AWC.

How long have you been using Red Sea? Good luck with this you will have to let us know what the mix parameters are

looking forward to hearing your review of this salt, I am also frustrated with the residue from tropic marin pro reef salt.

I thought that was supposed to be the cleanest salt out there.

Been using it for 10 years no complaints other than the crud. It’s not an issue if you’re just mixing salt at time of use for water changes (it does mix fast which is nice for that) but in a mix tank for AWC the crud has time to settle.

IMG_9213.JPGThese containers have only had Tropic Marin Pro in them since new, this is after 12 months of mixing 40 Gal a week.

What kind of residue? I use Tropic Marin Bio-actif and I've never had crud/residue.

Have you considered putting a sediment filter on your freshly mixed saltwater?
I’ve seen a few have done this and plan to do it on my new build as I’ll be using RC and I hate the sludge. I already bought a case of sediment filters.

I just switched to the Nyos salt myself and it mixes very fast and clears up in a few minutes. I haven't gotten my test kits out yet to double check the parameters listed, but generally don't need it to be dead on since small water changes won't swing a parameter too much. I like it and don't expect to see too much deviation from ICP test results on the package.

I have and tried it with success but found it to be a tedious step in mixing salt. You have leave it running constantly or water gets stagnant/rancid in the canister from sitting and then you have to empty and replace the filter every time. I figure the tiny price increase in salt cost will be nothing compared to what sediment filters and electricity to run a maxijet 24/7.

I had to choose between Nyos and Fauna Marin which is also German, pharmaceutical grade, and ICP verified but it’s $20 more for 20kg. Only Saltwater Aquarium stocks it and nobody in the states seems to use it which makes me think distro won’t last long here.

QT/frag tank all finished up.

Rock and frags on a rack with 2x VCA nozzles blasting underneath, and made a little electrical panel hung from a joist above/behind the tank.

Trying my hand at ammonia dosing to feed the coral as I don’t intend to add fish. I read that it is actually the preferred way for corals to take up nutrients vs nitrate. Been dosing .1ppm daily for a couple days now so we’ll see.

That’s really interesting. I have my fishless coral/invert QT tank. I’ve always dosed nitrate, but I’m sure there is plenty of nitrifying bacteria in there. Interesting concept to dose ammonia vs nitrate. Hrm.

IMG_6909.jpegOpe no wonder my tank pH is depressed. Pretty surprising for an old house with old windows. This is my bedroom at night. House during the day averages 1100-1200. Basement is around 600ppm so I’m looking into makeup air or an ERV. I can DIY an nice Panasonic ERV for around $1200 so weighing my options. Sure, I can get a massive co2 scrubber and solenoids to switch when tank oH is good and the scrubber will help with my co2 levels a bit in the house but I can’t see it making much of a dent. Of course it could be great for the tank…

How do you lower it in the entire house without opening the windows. 😁

What are you using to test. Im curious on mine now. My HRV is set to not run if it’s to cold or to hot or to humid. This helps keep it more efficient. But im sure this make my co2 increase during these peak time.

I’m using an Aranet4. They came down in price enough I could palate it. The Vitakight is $38 and uses the same sensor if you just want to spot check and don’t want logging.

As we were talking about the CO2 scrubber on the other thread I created, I said: 'Uhhh, maybe I'll hook up a tube to get the outside air to my skimmer!' .. .. Then this morning, I woke up and thought: 'Uhhh, I dunno, things look fine, do I really need it? It's just me and my little dog in a 3 bedroom house. How much CO2 could there be? Do I need to spend money on something to read the CO2 level in the house that I probably will use once?' o_O ... I was looking at some CO2 measuring thing on Ebay that costs $18 - 30 (cheapest thing I could find, I guess). ... 😂😂 ... You must have a large household or something? ... Hmmm ... I'm kind of on the fence 🤔 😁
