buildup

I have a quick question... Can feeding a tank with phytoplankton cause a nitrate and/or phosphate buildup? Or can it fuel an algal bloom? Or any other bad outcomes? I have a reef with all sorts of corals. My dad picked some up and I'm not sure if I should use it or not. I know it's for feeding...
