I'm a new Nano owner and I recently stocked my tank with a few fish: 2 clowns, a purple Firefish, and a cleaner shrimp (Already had BTA, corals, and CUC). I think my firefish died though. I have not seen it in the past 48 hours (usually is outgoing for a firefish and swims at the front of the tank with my clowns). I haven't given up hope that he may be hiding inside my porous rock, but he didn't even come out for food unlike before. Assuming he has moved on, should I be concerned about a spike in my nitrates? Are there any other water quality concerns I should monitor? I don't have a refugium or UV sterilizer set up yet. I hope he surprises me and shows up, but I don't wanna be caught sitting on my hands should something happen. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Do you have a nitrate test kit? Assuming your tank is properly cycled, you'll see a bit of ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate. If you're concerned you lost it and can't find the body, just perform a few extra water changes during the next couple of days until your clean up crew takes care of it.

Do you have any crabs or other detritus eating clean up organisms?

I have test strips but they don't test for Ammonia, I'll grab a test kit when I can tomorrow. I have a good bunch of hermit crabs, a green emerald and plenty of nassarius snails.

I'll keep a watchful eye, but I'm fairly sure he is gone. He didn't usually hide and when he did it was just in the middle of my tank (somewhere visible) and he always came out of food. :(
I just hope my anemone didn't eat him.

I lost all 4 of my firefish to carpet surfing one at a time over a 4 or 5 month period. Did not see them until I had to re-plumb my overflow behind the stand.
