Reading online there is pretty consistent information saying add baking soda to freshwater to stabilize alk and get ph around 8.0 or match your tank

Water out of my tap is 9.0 ph and my rodi is about 10.4. However the internet say it should be below that (see below)

Adding baking soda will raise ph? Right

My saltwater ph is around 8

What am I missing? Do I need to add vinegar to bring ph down? Is my ph meter off. Do the basics of science not apply in my house?

I do have water softener

Pretty sure it’s not the best way but I’ve always used this buffer powder

Are you testing the RODI water straight out of the tube, or after it's degassed for a while? What's the TDS of the water before anything is added? I'm willing to bet it's probably either 1) part of your RODI unit needs to be replaced, 2) the water coming out needs to be degassed (aerate for 20 minutes or let it sit for a few hours), or 3) something's wrong with the pH test you're using (is it calibrated?)

Technically RODI water should be 7.0 or a little bit less than that due to CO2 in the air and lack of buffering salts in the water.

And yes, baking soda will raise pH, but it will also buffer the pH a bit during the dip to prevent a massive pH swing during the dip as fish respire and produce waste.
