I'm wondering if anyone has insulated their sump with foam. If so, how much of a difference did it make in how much your heater ran?

I'm also thinking covering my sump with glass lids.
    pro's:
    - preserve heat; efficiency; same electricity
    - reduce evaporation

    Cons:
    - reduced light to my chaeto
    - needing to clean off the lids
    - reduced air exchange

Although, from what I've read I shouldn't need to worry about air exchange if I run my skimmer and don't cover the display tank. I have a canopy on the display with a fan of needed.

    What your experiences and thoughts?

Mostly, I'm thinking of my 180 build and trying to save on electricity and am concerned about the amount of evaporation and therefore humidity in my home. .

The lid would do more for heat than anything. Evaporation is a major component to heat loss.

On my system once I reduced my running tank temp to 77 with a 1 degree swing my heater turns on twice a day.

I have a remote basement sump that consists of two stacked 40G breeder tanks. Both tanks have pink foam board glued on 3 sides and one of the tanks has a foam board cover. As Ryan stated the cover does for sure make a difference and I have to assume that the insulated sides help somewhat. I painted the outside of the tank glass and the pink foam black and its held up perfectly for the past 12 years or so. I love my remote sump but it definitely takes more to keep the water up to temp.

    I hadn't noticed.

That's an affordable option for insulation. I was thinking of foam. I could use that and use insulation all around and use Velcro in the front so that it is removable to see in the sump when desired.
