I have a G2 skimmer that is in my opinion under performing... it works but could be pulling more. It looks like many of the "premium" skimmers use a bubble plate to minimize turbulence in the bubble chamber... these ASM's just shoot the bubbles against the far wall of the skimmer... i am thinking of buying a 4" wide piece of PVC and capping it with a bubble plate... and directing the output of the pump there. Also has anyone ever opened the air/venturi hole on the input of the pump to introduce more air? I dont want to get all crazy and ruin the skimmer either.

Your not going to see any appreciatable difference by trying to add a bubble plate.
If your looking to increase air, your going to want to do the mesh mod impeller. Only trouble is that the mesh wears out over a few months so you keep having to replace it.

I have the euroreef rs-80 which I think is almost the same skimmer just differenet years. Someone can correct me if I am wrong on that. In the manual for my skimmer it actually says to remove the vlave from the airtube and let it run wide open. It says only use the regulating valve if I experience problems. Also if your skimmer has the sedra 3500 pump you could upgrade to the Sedra 5000. Thats what I did and it made a world of difference.
i was thinking about upgrading the pump as i have heard the same thing... i still cant get over how much space it seems to be wasting in the reaction chamber... i am tempted to get at least a 90 elbow and point it down into a cup and have the bubbles go up from there.... the cup would only be to keep the output bubble free....
no its not inside the reaction chamber it pumps into the reaction chamber.... but its at least 7-8 inches up... i would like to point the input downward into a bubble cup to decrease turbulence higher in the chamber and increase the reaction time. I think increasing the pump will be the biggest impact but also by far the biggest cost.

i have done numerous skimmer mods of all flavors, unfortunetly most of them have been dismal failures:gay1:
The most easily accomplished is to overdrive with a feed pump bigger than recommended, you can tone down with a ball valve. I recently tried retrofitting a true mazzi venturi to turbo charge a skimmer i didnt check flow spec on the mazzi and it doesnt even pull air (pump way too small). Good skimmers are engineered and should stay that way IMHO. The ones i mess with are shop use stuff i have laying around that are pretty much shot anyway so no harm done. Havent given up on the mazzi - goal is to fabricate a high flow, portable 03 reactor for use in the field, amazing how fast you can clean up an organic laden mess of a tank with some efficient oxidation. I agree with Dave on the bubbleplate.
