    Here is the situation:

I had a Maldives Emperor Angel, probably around 6-7" Very nice fish, fully QT, a beauty. After QT I put him in my display tank. I had a couple large angels in there already, large Annularis and large Queen. So you hope for peace. After about a week or so I realized the Annularis was not going to go for it. I have a buddy of mine that had a nice 150 gallon tank wide open. So I asked him if I could store the Emperor in his tank for a bit while I figure out the aggression issue. Win win. I got to break up the fish fighting, he got to enjoy a beautiful Maldives Emperor. So I brought it over and all is good.

In the mean time I was thinking, could I take the other angels out, introduce the Emperor first, and try again. I have some other friends with large tanks, so I could have them housed in other large tanks. My QT is not that large.

    The Twist:

During this time, my friend really liked the emperor, it was a beauty. He had a Powder Blue Tang in another 120 Fat Boy tank that was out growing it. So, we made up a deal to trade. I get his Powder Blue, he gets the Emperor. I know the angel is more valuable, not worried about that...he is a fellow hobbyist and friend. So I brought over a fish trap to help him out for he did not have one. I have a Jlanger special...real nice fish trap.

Long story short, his house lost power and the Powder Blue Tang died. I said, that is too bad. He said it was my fish and that I can come and get it, he threw it out in the wetlands in his back yard. I said, I don't think so. I said I could either come get the angel if he didn't want it or he could give me $150 for it...probably a $400 show piece. But friends, whatever.

So now I have no Emperor, no Powder Blue, and/or no cash. Doesn't seem right.

I will try to create a poll, but have never done one, so not sure I will be able to do it?

But in short, what is the right thing to do, what are your thoughts?

I feel that until the fish is in your possession, he is still responsible for the health of it/value of the traded goods.

One thing that might be relevant, did you have a trade date set or was it "I'll come over sometime"? If you had the date set, then I'd say the trade did not happen until then.

Another thing to think through, what if it was the angel that died? Would you still expect the tang?

The answer is probably going to be something in between. He lost the tang while in his possession. So he probably owes you something for either the lost tang, or if you look at it the other way for the angel he no longer has a trade for.

@H2OHOH I would think that your reefing friend would at least owe you back the angel plus 2 hot dogs and large beverage from Holiday for the troubles

After a five minute power outage? Tang police have been notified! Funny how all of the other Reefking fish are fat and happy. ;)

There's only 1 thing am curious about - how big was the tank with the powder blue and how long was the outage that caused the death ?

Well, so that is, even more, not your problem. Until the fish is in your hands and under your control, it is not your problem.

I agree, you never took possession of the fish. Their bad system design led to the outage that caused the loss of the tang. Not on you to just live with giving them the angel for free.

That bit of info is important either way. Friend's system problem kills your fish, he owe you a fish or something of equivalent value. Alternately friends system kills his fish that he was going to trade, trade is off or new trade needs to be arranged.

As you never received possession of your half of the trade it should cancel the deal and you should get your angel back. Pretty sleazy to do something like this to a "friend".
