Hey guys, new to the forums so thought id share my tank with you and see maybe if anyone has thoughts on it.

New to marine, not new to friend keeping, have had freshwater system for some time as well as 2 beardies to keep my 4 legged friends company when im gone.

Tank stats :
FoWLR
75 gallon, 2 months old
Rena Filstar XP2 canister
Hydro inline heater
Hydro 600gph powerhead (right side of full tank pic)
Maxi-Jet 1200gph powerhead (left side of full tank pic)
120 lbs Live Rock
2 10k CF lights + 2 10k 50/50 CF lights

Tank runs at a steady 78.7 degrees (turned down from 80.5)
PH 8.4
Salinity 1.024
Hard water (not using RO)

I was using a seaclone skimmer but only for a week, i had purchased it from craigslist and shortly after installing it had a small brown algae outbreak. I had cleaned the skimmer best i could but of course i could not scrub every inch of it. Planning on throwing it away and purchasing one from the store.

I use Microb Lift Special Blend regularly and i think that stopped the brown algae in its tracks becouse it didnt break out like i was afraid it would.

Currently have
1 Sand Sifting Banded Goby
2 Percs
~35 Dwarf Hermits
10 Emerald/Mithrax Crabs

I just added Strawberry Purple Pseudochromis yesterday but he seems to be arguing a bit with the Banded, will keep an eye on it and may end up returing him for something else.

Is it normal for a banded sand sifter to fight initially with a strawberry pseudo?

also does anyone have any tips on getting a regal to eat seaweed/greenalgae from a food clip?

Is it normal for a regal to look like its playing dead when it sleeps?

Soak the green algae in garlic extreme or something, keep an eye for ich, also that doesn't look like 120 lbs of LR in your display.

yes :)

Welcome to TCMAS!

You'll find TONS of info on the site :) (are you sure on the weight of your rock?)

NE Minneapolis, about as far North as you can get without being in Columbia heights.

1. Ditch all those air hose and bubblers unless you like cleaning salt creep.

2. Don't buy another seaclone they are crap.

3. The hippo tang is mainly planktonic so you dont have to worry if it's not eating the algae sheets.

4. That pseudo of yours is gonna end up being a pita unless you plan to keep only very aggressive fish.

I think that is all I can think of that hasn't been mentioned. You are looking good!

Welcome.

Buy a RODI unit before you buy another skimmer.

Welcome. I'm surprised its the goby that's the aggressive one rather than the other way around. I do agree with hypertech that an RODI would be the next best investment although there has been many gripes about the seaclone.

Another NM member! Welcome!!! Tank looking nice - looks like most everyone has already covered your initial questions - I say ditch the Rena....really not worth using on a SW as your LR should house all the bacteria and if you dont clean the Rena enough - it will start housing bad stuff....JMHO

There's my :2cents:

figured that out lol, at least i got a maxijet 1200 out of it.

If i keep up on it i wont have a disaster, i dont think, figured i would need at least 1 since i dont have a sump/refugium going yet.. and not sure im going to set one up in the near future (next 4-6 months).. can i get away without air, and just PWC's?

nice one, and i can get a 3 stage for $150 range if im not mistaken... thanks

yea, already had to clean the Rena out, part of owning a canister is being responsible and cleaning it on a regular basis without disturbing your media, unfortunatly, im not 100% comfortable ditching it though, especially with no sump/refugium and no skimmer.

P.S.
NE metro is where the cool people flock to, just try to avoid Fridley :p

Uh, whoa dude, you seriously want to get into the location coolness war already??? Dang, your jumping in head first!! :gay1::gay1:

As far as the air, as long as you have the power heads moving the water for you, you should have plenty of gas exchange. I ran my 45 with just a 1200 mj (no sump) and had no issues

I also toyed with the idea of hooking up my Rena on my 45 but was told my LR would be all I need and it indeed was

and in closing I have to add my usual disclaimer - I am definetly not an expert...pretty darn new myself....:goldfish:

air stones are an out dated way to oxygenate the tank or used in small tanks that cannot fit filters or powerheads. The common belief that the bubbles oxygenates the water is not 100% true. Although some oxygen/water exchange may occur within the water coloumn, the most efficient area that the most air exchange will occur is the surface, therefore the best way to oxygenate the water is surface agitation. Basically the bubbles oxygenate the water best when the bubbles hit the surface and spreads.

Power heads are more efficient at causing surface agitation and more efficient for oxygenating water. Pretty much all you need to do is aim your powerhead to create some surface agitation and your tank will be nicely oxygenated.

Man took me forever to type this with the iPhone but I'm loving it!!!
