violet jellyfish (1 Viewer)

Awesome! :biggthumpup::biggthumpup::biggthumpup:

Nice job on the removable screen. That will make it really nice when it needs more maintenance then just brushing off the screen in-tank can do. Do you have another screen made that you can swap out with this one when it needs to be taken out, or will just rinse it quick and put it back in?

This jelly looks just like the blue blubber, or spotted lagoon jellyfish (Mastigias papua). Is yours a different species or a different common name? Does it also have zooxanthellae like these do?

If this Jellyfish is the one you're holding for someone while they work on getting their tank, it's my understanding that these can swim through the water column and don't rely on a rotating current to keep them suspended. I've seen these in biorb aquariums with those flat glass marbles in the bottom like they sell at craft stores. Your person could look into one of those since they are pretty common, though it will limit the kinds of jellies it they contain in the future.

Anyway, your tank is awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing what you put in it for yourself. It's given me new motivation to work on mine again. I've had most of my supplies since October. I'm going to get crackin' again! :beerchug:

yeah, spotted lagoon jellyfish is what they are. unfortunately quality marine is calling them violet jellyfish, and they assured us they dont need light, and actually dont like bright light... next time i'll be sure to tell them all about these lagoon jellyfish and what they need. i'm not holding the jelly for someone, i sold them the tank that i built.

now i want some for myself, so maybe i'll look into the biorb aquarium.

The lagoon jellyfish actually use both food and light. When they are kept well fed, they swim throughout the water column. Without the presence of food, the rest on the bottom upside-down to expose their zooxanthellae and use nutrition from that.

That's cool to know that Quality Marine carries these.

yeah, all he has right now that'll work is the PC. he's feeding them well though.

What shape aquarium are they in?
