What's a good way to remove the rim of a tank without either damaging the rim or damaging the tank?

Its probably not beveled or ground and likely sharp as hell. Rimless tanks need thicker glass to stay together than the same size with a rim. If you want a rimless tank, buy a rimless tank. Otherwise you'll probably end up with an ugly, dangerous, broken aquarium.

I don't want a rimless tank, I just I need to take the rim off, put a custom insert in, then put the rim back on. The insert is going to be off of the inside demensions of the tank is why I can't just shimmy it in.

If it's better to cut the rim off and buy a new rim, I can go that route, I just have no idea where to buy a 24x12 tank rim. I'd rather not have to buy something if I don't have to though.

That's why I want to separate the two without damaging either.

Is this for a sump baffle or something? I can't think of any combobulation where you couldn't get it in some way without removing the rim.

To answer you question - I don't think you are going to get that rim off without destroying the rim, the tank, or both. Its probably goobered up with silicone.

I have removed the rim from a few tanks and it is no easy task. I would say most likely impossible without breaking the rim.

I have a tank that is as tall as it is wide. I'm making a pseudokreisel with it that will have a display area in the front, and filtration built in the back. This way I accomplish what I want to accomplish without drilling, and nothing is permanent with the tank.

But anyway, regardless of the application..........So taking the rim of intact probably a very difficult feat? Any stores that anyone knows of that will order a replacement rim for an aqueon brand tank? I guess I figured taking the rim off intact just had some sort of trick to it.

Couldn't you just cut the inside rim in one place, and feed the insert through the small gap? Then just silicone it up.

Call 1-888-255-4527. This is Aqueon's Customer Service #. You can get a new one from them. I recentally replaced one on my 125 and it was a pain in the a**. If you have any questions on how to remove PM me and I'll try to help. :beerchug:

Where ever trigger freak works, I think they actually stock them.

If something fishy stocks them, then that would be easy replacementwise.

I would think the best way to get it off is a extremely sharp but thin blade. I'm thinking like a windshield knife but even that might be to thick. you'll need to get between the rim/glass a good 1.5 to 2"

Here's how I did mine:beerchug: Worked really well

Cool, thanks. That's what I started to do, but haven't gotten it off yet. Looks like I'm on the right track and I'll keep working at it. If worse comes to worse, I'll just have to buy a new rim.

Buy the new rim regardless they are notorious for cracking and breaking after they are 2-3 yrs old (become very common). The plastic ain't what it used to be...now it dries out from the heat and the water and becomes very brittle. The new rim is only about $15 and TerreQuatics can get them if you have trouble
