Hey guys and gals-

I am getting ready to set up my 55sw fish only tank. Was wondering if anyone uses the black sand. I really like the way if looks and think it would hide gunk on the bottom better. Any thoughts on this? good idea/bad?

Thanks much!

Black looks really awesome since most people dont use it. Its always good to have a different look. Good luck with the setup and let me know if you have questions or need anything.

i use it it looks awsome but if u have fish such as scooter blenny or lawn mower blenny they will be darker in color then most other peoples

i had it and didnt care for it much cause stuff actaully showed up more. like little gunk.

Black sand would be sweet! But I sugest u ditch the 55

whatever Peng, 55's rock... :gay1: don't be a hat'n... Kay your 55 is good since you r only doing fish... as far as the black sand, I think its based on the aquarists personal preference... I'd say go for it since you got the loot :gay1: ....

I'm gonna stick with the Fiji pink sand that I bought initially....looked at some tanks this weekend and really like how that sand looked...

Just incase anybody had a smaller tank and was still interested; I had black sand in a 10 gallon tank I had at work; Worst mistake ever; the brand I had was magnetic and stuffed up my impeller for every pump I had. Also my mag-float became covered in the stuff. Dont remember the brand so I guess its not very helpful of me...

Black Beauty slag?
Wow that black sand really makes the rocks pop!

In freshwater tanks I have used a mixture of 3M color quartz (available at Sterling Supply in mpls) and handy sand (available at Menards)

The color Quartz rocks but is a bit oily at first. I have no idea how it woudl react in a SW setup and I would think that crushed coral or aragonite would be best as it provides a source of calcium to buffer. The 3M stuff peovides nothing.

If you were to do a mix I bet it would hide alot of those white patricles that some have complained about. See my bottom photo for an example of a black and white substrate mix.

This tank was 75% black and 25% white:

I had that tahitian moon sand and it was like that, very coarse, stuck to the magfloat, got everywhere! Corals popped out against it but made the tank look dark and within a year had so much debris and crap on it I hated it, took it out one day and went back to white, much easier to keep neat looking.

Black sand does look cool but one thing to note is that white sand is a reflector of light.

Therfore if you have no sand or black sand - your tank will be darker.
