My 40 Gallon Rimless Reef has come a long way (1 Viewer)

Starting to pick up some more pieces sure wish I had an unlimited money cheat on real life... I'm heading home March 31st through the 7th so maybe I'll bring a few treats up to share with you guys once they've grown out a little...

I know at a minimum I want a stupid tail spot blenny after seeing Ray's I'm jealous for such a common fish; if anyone wants to pass the torch on my Midas blenny I'll probably let it go for a decent price of around 25$

ITS TIME; I turned the white LED's on; cant believe the amount of polyp extension I am getting; Really want to get the PAR readings before I start lowering the light if necessary; So far All my corals that made it through the darkness period of no lights for two weeks and the stress of moving for 3 days from 70 degree weather to 30 degree weather are doing great.

A few corals have been doing poorly for some time however it looks like things are starting to turn around already; I had a huge cluster of lobos that bleached up pretty bad and they're starting to puff up nicely otherwise things are kicking up nicely.

Next steps are.. this weekend I'll be fragging a single Captain American Paly, a small piece of my tyree war coral; a strange maroon color monti; and maybe a duncan or two. If anyones interested let me know.

Special thanks to Ray for those Purple Deaths; they're open and starting to color up nice! Pictures to follow once everything colors up. Im still having trouble with my calcium and alk levels being off the charts so I'll check to see if theres any reductions from my systems rate of consumption.

Probably should have updated the lighting portion of this tank here but you can check it out here;

Its very tough knowing that I'll have to board a plane in a few days and I cant take all these deals home with me; Everything is cheaper than I remember and theres no shortage of great fish this week..... Also the weather is amazing in Miami.

However this dream is coming to an end but at least I'll be bringing some goodies up for myself and hopefully for you guys soon once I can start fragging some new corals I'm bringing.

Heres my latest fish (pending a mated pair of black percs) my new long nose hawkfish and randall goby (pending pistol shrimp) sitting in my buddies temporary fish hotel for my livestock. I had hopped not to check in my bags but at this right its looking like a cooler and heat-pack are going to replace some clothing...

Thanks; Can't really complain now that the temp is warming up; hoping to take the nitro r/c boat out to the lakes one of these weekends;

I cant wait for the swap to stock up on SPS; I think I'm going to give it a shot and do some cool things with trimmings;

So far the zoa spirals are filling in nicely and its been pretty easy to frag things with just a pocket knife. (you can see the bam bam and magician spiral coming together in the youtube video)

On another side of the tank I'm spiraling eagle eyes and other zoa's like purple deaths (Ray: from 5 to 10 already those things grow wild) and my lobo's which took a dive well before I moved are really showing signs of color and mass; My levels have been consistently perfect and with the glass top I could rest assured no ones getting out.

what do you mean by spiraling. Are you manicuring your zoas to make them grow in bands? IF a zoa grows outside of your spiral do you move it to more preferred placement or do you just leave it.

If they grow out of line; they get cut out and relocated to continue the pattern;
When the time comes and zoas eventually grow too close I trim whats in the "cut area"; an approximately 1/2" in between the different morphs for grow out; Whats clipped is going for fragging.

This kinda designing through pruning is what I'm trying apply. I've grouped the legs by colors as well; one side is reds oranges; another is green's and purples and the back leg is purples pinks and reds and blues. It will be more noticeable when things really start growing out. I'm trying to be very strategic about placement to come up with a really interesting system.

Heres some in-tank HD video for your viewing pleasure; hopefully after the frag swap I think I'll officially be out of space and allow the corals to grow out and be pruned to my liking. Things are getting cramped as is so at some point it'll just be a constant fragging party in there to keep things under control.

I CANT WAIT FOR THE SWAPPPP!!! I got permission to dump some serious cash this saturday on stocking up with rare zoas and trying out some SPS.

As much as I like LPS I'm going to stay away until I have a complete collection of zoas and SPS doing well.

Stay tuned for Sundays big update on my new corals and how great everything has been progressing; I'm going to start growth Pictures Sunday to make a time lapse video of the tank now that its almost complete and I'm gonna do SPS.

The camera is just a 14 megapixel point-and-shoot, it takes decent shots in natural light but the sensor is horrible when it comes to the LED's; The blue LED's screw with the sensor so much it looks like extreme heat/radiation on a thermal camera.

The model is Tough 8010 http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1497

Nice vids Jimmy! Now get those new eye-candy frags in there and post new vids! ;)

:beerchug:

I though it was game over for my purple hornets (I glued them in a little messy) But they're open today; Not sure if you guys saw the coolers contents at the swap but I picked up: Reef Tech Starburst monti, purple haze monti, a spiderman like monti, ORA redplanet (DOING GREAT), Tricolor Purple Acro (DOING GREAT), Blue Steels (or often times called african blue hornets), Purple Hornets, Sunny D's, Candy Apple Reds and a Watermelon Chalice.

Lastly, I'm patiently feeding my black sun polyps hoping for them to open; using a soup of mysis, brine, rods coral food and some cyclopese.
