75 gallon tank - New to Saltwater (1 Viewer)

All the Bulk Reef Supply rock says eco, even the fiji says eco on it.

I like the pukani rock too... IDK which I will get. at least I have time to think about it.

PM sent on rock.
As far as heaters, this is what I did. I ran one smaller heater that was undersized for the tank. I ran it full temp on 100% of the time on an outlet (not an a RKL outlet). The second heater was hooked up to the RKL, set 2 degrees higher on the dial of the heater than the temp I set on the RKL. If the RKL was to fail, or the heater to fail, the small one could keep up enough to prevent a crash. Maks sense?

Has anybody used the BRS "Reef Saver" rock? Do you have any pics of the aquascape with that rock?

Now I'm leaning towards that instead of the fiji rock. ugh decisions.

Did not test the tank last night but should be able to get to it tonight.
I have BRS pukani in my display. Once again, defer to my build thread, I haven't put up any pics of it aquascaped yet, but hopefully I will get a chance soon. I bought 40 lbs (which turned out to be the perfect amount for my 75G.) Soaked the rock in 15G RODI/1G muriatic acid (I still have another other gallon if you want it) for a week out on my apartment balcony...this was not what I meant to do, but my schedule is so cramped I didn't get a chance to take it out sooner. It worked out just fine, the rock didn't seem any more brittle than when I put it in. when I pulled the rock out I dipped it in two buckets of RODI water, then let it soak for another week in RODI water, then, I dipped it in two more buckets of clean RODI water, and took a screwdriver to the rocks to remove bits of dead sponge and other organics. If you really wanted to go crazy, you could scrub the rock with a stiff bristle brush. After all was said and done, my phosphates were/are really low, and the rock looks great.

Filled the tank last night and there were no leaking this morning. I should be able to set up the plumbing and fill it next week.

How long should I soak the rock in the acid? I can take the the Muriatic acid if you want to sell it to me.

I did it for a week, but I believe 24 hours is sufficient. If you really want to go crazy, bleach the rock after you soak it in clean rodi. And you can have the acid.

If you search the forums, there are several that discuss the length. I did mine two times, each 30 mins. Dip rock for 30 mins. Dumped acid and washed the rock with a hose to get gunk off. Dip for another 30 mins, and then rinsed off.

Remember, becareful with the stuff. It is nasty stuff. Wear protection (gloves, goggles, etc). Do not breath in vapors so do it outside. I threw in baking soda when it was time to dump the stuff to dilute it. You dont want a neigborhood dog suddenly come running up and start licking the stuff off the street. Beach i dont think is necessary. the rock itself is pretty darn clean after two acid dips.

As for sand, I'm looking at CaribSea Dry Aragonite sand. Not sure what size to get but looking at their website I think I will either choose the aragamax select or the aragamax sugar sized. Or should I get a mix of the two? Will the sugar sand get kicked up to easily? And is either suitable for sand sifters?

Thanks

I was thinking about your setup, and wanted to make sure the return pump you are using is reef safe. Make sure there is no copper on the pump or you will ruin everything. Tank, rock, sand, everything.

how do you know if the pump has copper on/in it?

I don't really know. I know some people have gotten pumps at places like home depot that are not intended for aquariums and they can leech copper. It looks like Pondmaster pumps are sold for aquariums, is that correct?

I initially assumed from the name that it was designed for an outdoor pond or something.

Hopefully someone can chime in and clarify this for us.

This thread talks about it:

Update: Went around to a couple LFS yesterday and ended up finding a good deal on a 30 long at Wet World. The tank comes in on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I also got my 37 gallon QT almost ready to set up and soaked most of my used equipment in vinegar water then rinsed.

I have a question about heaters. While going through some stuff I found 3 heaters: a Hydor 150 watt, a Jager 150W, and a crappy Petco brand heater.

The Hydor heater looks to be fine, but the Jager looks like it may have leaked somewhere because of some discoloration and spots on the inside. I plan on using the Hydor in my tank and buying a new Jager.

The Hydor says its good for 23-40 gallons but the Jager watt to gallons are different. Should I get a 150W:53-79 gallons or a 200W 76-106 gallons?

For my 75g, i run two 150 watt in the 40g sump. Keeps the water a nice steady temp. Didnt read everything but do you have a controller to put redudancy for the heaters? If not, get a RKL or something like that. Helps with controlling lights, heaters, etc.

I run one single 300W Vivaqua Titanium Heater. 75 gal with 20 long sump.

Just ordered some supplies for Marinedepot.com

-150watt Jager Trutemp heater
-Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Saltwater Liquid Master Test Kit
-(2) 40lb bags of CaribSea Dry Aragonite Special Grade Reef Sand
-(2) 750 gphHydor Koralia Evolution Circulation Pump/Powerhead

Also, ordered 40 lbs of Dry Pukani from BRS.

Hopefully, I'll be ready to set up and cycle next week. Going to setup the QT tank this week hopefully, but I don't have a refractometer or hydrometer yet.

Not really sure on the test kit u got. Usually stick with salifret or red sea pro. Also two 750 isn't much flow for 75g. Usually use 1400. Can u cancel and reorder?

I currently have a 75 and am running 2 1050's and a 750. There is a lot of flow paired with the HOB skimmer output. About 43x.

I think you should have at a minimum, a pair of 1050's.

I'm running 4 800s in my tank, more conrol over the flow, and it's not freaking out my lawnmower blenny like the 2 800 and 2 1400 combo was.
