75 gallon tank - New to Saltwater (1 Viewer)

Turning off and on those things every 30 secs will break them very quickly. I just setup a multi timer for each of my pumps. Run them for 2-3 hrs on, 30 mins off. Set it up as random on/off.

Here is the list I got from reefcleaners.org

30 Dwarf Ceriths - small effective cleaners
11 Nassarius
12 Florida Ceriths
9 Blue Legs
4 Large Nerite and 7 Small to medium Nerites
1 chaeto

What do you think? Should I just get a few of each from the list at first then add to it later? Anything on there that I should avoid?

I also want to get an emerald crab but not sure if it goes with everything else or if I should wait to get it.

That actually doesn't seem to excessive, I might cut the Dwarf ceriths down to 15 or 20, and get 3 red legged and 2 blue legged (drop the blues in your refugium). Definately get some turbos, I have 3 in my display, and two in my fuge. The Emerald crabs are pretty peaceful, they mainly eat algae, but you will rarely, if ever, see them during the day. They usually leave the rest of your livestock alone. Above all, remember, crabs of any kind can be aggressive. However, I believe it is due to having a limited food supply, keep them well fed, and you shouldn't have a problem.

That's just my 2 cents worth, hopefully somebody with more experience can chime in. I know David Grigor (the go to reef god of the forum) doesn't have any clean up crew in his tank, but he syphons the sand and scrubs things down every water change. He's the other extreme to the people who have 200+ snails and crabs in their 75 gallons lol.

I skipped the hermits and just went with snails from reefcleaners. You save a lot of $$ in shipping since snails are priority mail and hermits are overnight. I bought emeralds locally. You can get them pretty cheap. In the beginning when your load is light, i think snails do enough. I have my emerald hit up the rocks and I got a goby that sifts the sand with my nerts. Keeps my tank pretty clean.

Can snails be ordered in the winter time? I always wondered about that when ordering any livestock in the winter when it is so cold here.

some live stock i wouldnt order in the winter, snails do fine long as they are packaged properly.

I recently received 90+ snails from reefcleaners.org, they were sent priority mail (because this was the free option for my order :D)

hermits cant be ordered via priority mail, so if you order hermits youll either need to meet the minimum order for free express delivery, or pay ~$10 for the express upgrade.

So I ordered some snails last night. Luckily this week the weather is supposed to be pretty warm. Should I add hermits at the same time or wait?

I have a question about my skimmer. With my tank being located downstairs in the main living room that also houses my home theater I want minimum noise. I got the herbie drain and return pump to be almost silent but the pump for the skimmer pump is pretty loud.

Would it be fine to have the skimmer shut off during the evenings when I am watching tv and movies? It would be able to run during the day when I'm not there and during the night. Would there be any side effects to turning it off and on?

Nope. Turn skimmer off/on whenever. No biggie.

Just FYI. If you ever turn off the return pump make sure you turn off the skimmer! The rise in water in the sump will cause the skimmer to overflow!

I did a water change last night and the snails should be coming tomorrow.

I realized that I need to come up with a better system for water changes.

Plan on getting a pair of clowns next week. Also will probably get an emerald crab soon too.

Couldn't find a 6500K cfl at home depot and don't have time to find a Lowe's. Would a 5000K CFL work for now? my snails and chaeto should be here today.

FYI Found them at Menards.

I got my snails yesterday. I got more snails than I ordered and some small hermit crab stowaways. I counted 4 hermit crabs that I could find.

I am hoping to get a pair of clowns this weekend and possibly an emerald crab. Can I add these at the same time right after I added the snails?

I will post a couple pics this weekend.

I added an emerald crab pretty early when the tank didnt have much growth on the rocks. I think it starved to death so maybe you should just do snails and clowns for now.

UPDATE:

I just got done building the canopy for this tank. All that is left is to get some doors on it but it is on the tank right now. The canopy was built to house my DIY LED fixture and everything is working great. I will hopefully get some FTS very soon. (I'm terrible at getting pics up).
