return plumbing silencer? (1 Viewer)

never doubted you guys for a second but its easier said then done, Iam in mankato. No one here that i know would drill a tank (considering I have only lived here a year now). I wont drill it myself considering I cant really afford another one right now, Bright side is theres already a hose in it, easy draining:clown:

I live in mankato. in a 1 bdrm apartment.....:bawling:

o ya (edited for a ps) P.S. no router, i do have a circular saw and some sweet front steps...

Hrm, Mankato is just a bit of a drive for me. You can buy a glass hole saw from BRS for about $15.00. It's not difficult to do from what I understand. the only caveat is you need to know if the glass is tempered or not.

There are several members down in the mankato area that I'm sure will be happy to help out. If nothing else, give Fragtastic Reef a call.

interesting considering i was asking if anybody in the mankato area had a drillbit or would help me drill a hole in a piece of acrylic in a post not to long ago and not a single person responded or replied. Also Garrets hours are goofy as h*** Its hard enough for me to even get down there when hes open.

Well, the hole saws used for glass are very different than the ones you would use for acrylic, so that may have been part of the issue. Try PMing Garret and see if you can work out a convenient time for you.

ya the acrylic ones are cheaper, i'll text him and see what hes up to

:violin: Sounds like you just don't want to and looking for TCMAS to comfort you. Your a big boy/girl. Take care or it. If you can't afford to do it right, perhaps you should reconsider the whole thing.

Garret's shop is in Mankato. If he can't drill, I'm sure he knows someone or somewhere in town that can.

Garret has his hours posted either make the time or do it yourself. This is a hobby that does not allow to many short cuts, it is often better to do it well once rather than cheaper and have a huge failure or pay more to redo it. Also this is one of the most helpful forums and club I have ever seen. I am sure if someone could help within reason they would. Dont get an attitude If they cant. I live outside the club area and I have driven to TC for help.

Also if someone helps you drill the tank they cant be held responsible, so maybe it would be best if you dis it yourself.

hummm sounds kinda rude. thanks for being constructive buddy. I do very much enjoy the comfort of TCMAS though and I take this post in as disrespectful.

(swe holds them selves responsible but u still have to pay for the hole..)

anyway.. why u two were telling me my attitude is bad (maybe u just cant read my sarcasm) i went and got my tank drilled, it was fun, took hardly an hour (other then draining and scooping sand) ended up buying a dang shrimp goby as well.

Thanks for your help everybody, I will be posting pictures in my build thread (that i havent started yet)

o and thanks fragtastic reefs for helping me again. and again, and again:banana:

He's being honest. There's a difference between being an a-s-s and telling it like it is. Dave said exactly what I was going to say, and what everyone else was thinking. It's simply a dose of tough love, but there are two things that do not go well with this hobby: Doing things half assed, and doing things twice. We simply want to save you the pain of both.

Exactly Matt! David is one of the most helpful people here. People like him make the place worthwhile. I did see your sarcasm but I also could see you being feisty and also trying to cut corners.

Cool glad you got it drilled! Awesome and I look forward to seeing the new setup.

I can see dave has his hand in a quadrabillion post, and iam glad there are smart elders like that out there, good job dave. lol

maybe i missed the part of this post where it included trying to cut corners, almost every pet store i have been in has 1 drain hole. thats why i asked. and i use tcmas as a helpful resource, i do understand its the internet and people are always full of steam on it but i asked for options, and from those options i did what was said from u guys before the violin played. (if u didnt notice i stated " i will give garret a call") this is not my first tank nor my last.
but everyone is entitled to there own opinions and that came off to me as disrespectful.

Pffffffttttt!

Whateva's - I don't really care how it got to this point - just glad it got to the point that you tore it down and got it drilled.

Now lets see some pics

WOOOT!!! Did you get an overflow box per chance? If not take a 2"-1" PVC reducer and cut teeth into it. Also, since I assume this is going to be plumbed with the Herbie method, make sure you get a gate valve for the main drain so you can dial in your flow and get rid of that drain noise.

so the herbie method is pretty much just some ball valves in the return plumbing, that dials in the amount of water returning to the sump thus making the drain noise stop?

You got it. It keeps air from getting into the drain, so no gurgle. You use the gate valve to limit the water. That is why you need the backup line, so if the "tuned" drain is not keeping up you have a backup.

Do not use ball valves. You will need to use gate valves. Ball valves aren't adjustable enough, and they will seize up.

No problem! My tank only has one drain hole, but of course if I were to do it over I'd have two. Although, I've done everything you could do to prevent the drain from being clogged. Only once it had an issue when a small fish made its way in and blocked the gate valve, but I caught it in time because the sump emptied itself and started sucking air before the tank overflowed. It's designs like that which make it okay to "cut corners", such as having a sump big enough and the water level in it low enough so it doesn't overflow when the system loses electricity. Each time I've had an accident or close call I've made changes to make sure it wouldn't happen again. So far, so good!

Agreed! I used a ball valve at first and they absolutely suck. I redid ALL of my plumbing eventually and put in a gate valve.

so general consensus is get a gate valve not a ball valve, i assume it doesnt matter where the valve is placed? and so far I think everything is working good, Fingers crossed
