hey all just got thinking about weather or not to clean my sump out I have not touched it for almost 8 mos so there is lots of algae growing in it just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this. nate

can't see why not. Maybe disconect sump, then scrub it, then dump out nasty water, add same amount of new water, and re-connect. This way all of the junk does not get into your display :)

OT, but how is the stand problem working out?

Better to have algae growing in your sump than in your tank. You remove the algae in the sump you may start to see it growing in your tank. With that said, I vacuum out my sump every 8 months or so.

Wow - saw the title and was totally thinking this was a poll on if we should bring back the dirty sump forum!!! lol

I am all for regular maintenance - and that includes periodic cleaning of your sump

To much crap in your sump can become also a Nitrate factory.
As Jason suggested I also would clean the sump but leave some algae.
You always can remove some more later little by little. Don't shock the tank by doing everything at once.

Clean the sump and get rid of the algae. You don't want the algae to die down there are rerelease it's goodies. I guessing it will just grow back in the right conditions which is fine keep removing.

If your getting algae growth in your sump you will soon get Coraline growth as well. Id recommend removing the algae and eliminating light spilling on to the equipment side (assuming you have a fuge near by) of your sump.

clean it out... if u want another tank for alage build a refugium

+1 on cleaning and just pruning the algae. I like the idea of having a refugium as well, this way you can get some nitrate export via desirable macroalgae.

A dirty sump is the reason I am redoing it. This time I am keeping the fuge separate from the sump with equipment. I have all sorts of crud that is in the fuge that gets near pumps.

I would clean out the sump.

So you're going to have a separate tank for the refugium? How would the return plumbing work for that? Would you just use a Y pipe and have a pump in each tank? Hmm...
