Blue Vs. Red (1 Viewer)

Ok, I have been wondering is there really a difference between the Blue legged hermit and the Red legged Hermit? What is better for cleaning in a reef tank? Can you mix them? What has your experiences been with them. All I have always had were the blue ones.

the reds are supposidly less agressive..


i usually get a few different ones.... blue, red, the blk stripes...

imo... expect death of other hermits and snails with whatever oness you go with

I haven't added a cleanup crew to my 150 setup, because I don't believe that there is enough waste to sustain them yet. So, I would like to get the best when I do add them. I've never noticed the blue ones being aggressive, but maybe I never looked for it.

get some empty shells and scatter then through out the botom of the tank... this will supress the agression for homes... however if one wants the others home, they will try to take it...

where is the best place to get shells? I have been looking and can't really find any good deals. Thought about just getting too many for the cleanup crew and the strong shall survive and leave the shells behind. Any ideas?

i just bought some a couple weeks ago at michaels, i think they were about $3 for a good sized bag, natural and all kinds of shapes and colors. they were much cheaper than i had found online but there were some clam shells in the mix.

I've read some places that scarlet hermits are detrivores as well as eating leftovers, and may pick at cyano. But Don't quote me on that. I've just noticed that my scarlets were always doing something, picking at something, cleaning something. Busy little hermies.

I notice that the scarlets cost almost twice of the blues, and with that said, I always believe that you get what you pay for. I'm starting to lean towards the scarlets.

I have noticed the red scarlet seems to take a lot longer to move from one spot to another, like say a better nanny

the blues seem to just give all rocks a once over and then move on, the scarlets are deep cleaners, also grow slower, and mostly stick to themselves, i notice the blue ones always come out after the daylight is off and fight for new shells (i put 20 new shells in a big pile in the center of the tank)

i'd say the price for scarlets is well worth it.

I have packs of miscellaneous shells available in packs of 10 for $3.00 per pack. Includes Margarita, Cerith and other Miscellaneous shells available at the store.

Can also do larger and smaller packs on request.

Considering with tax, S/H at Drs Foster Smith you are paying something like .68 per shell - paying .30 each here might be worth your while to come check out
