Heater for 8 gallon??? (1 Viewer)

I have a 75 watt Jagar heater that I would like to use in a new 8 gallon freshwater aquarium that will likely have a Betta, 3-5 Cardinal Tettras, a couple ghost shrimp, and maybe an algae eater.

Is 75 watts too big for this tank? Will the tank get too hot after the thermostat shuts it down?

What temp should I set the heater to? My 28 g. reef tank runs about 80 degrees in the summer due to the heat. We set our AC to 78 degrees. The tank is a Aqueon 8 gallon cube with LED lights.

I would say 75 watts would be a good choice for your 8g. My 75w barely keeps up on my 22g and I wish I would have gone with a 150w and I am running at 75.5 degrees.

Been a while since the freshwater days but I think the magic number for temp is 78g.

If its 8 gallons, just put your hands on the sides when you walk by and that should be warm enough. 75watts will fry it!

Basement with 4 t-5's. Probably 68 degrees down there. Similar to what most people keep their houses at in the winter.

Why would a 75 watt fry the tank? I understand that Jagar heaters have precise thermostats.

Is it that it stays hot too long after the thermostat shuts down.
