Removing Sugar SB. Worth it? (1 Viewer)

OMG dude - really?

LOL Super noob

In honor of Hypertech lol

I knew that was coming.. Lol

The depth your talking about isn't going to make much if any difference. 1-2" you can safely remove without much worry about disruption. It's not enough to provide denitrification even if it's under the larger grains. There is greater benefit of keeping the detritus out by removing during siphoning than you would get by trying to keep undistrubed at such shallow depth.

You could just stick the new larger grains on top and eventually all the sugar will get siphoned out as you clean it. Like Angie said it may help get the new stuff seeded quicker too.

Well then! there's my answer! Now onto what reed sand to get, are the advertised "live sand" going to carry any un-wanted animals into my system? or is it all bacteria? I know live-sand is a pretty much a big joke but it's a question I had to ask! Is so I'm perfectly fine with buying the dry stuff and rinsing it pretty thoroughly.

Anyone have a preference between reef sands? Caribsea? Natures Ocean? Special Grade vs Fiji pink?

Thanks guys!

I already voted: Carib Sea Special Grade Reef Sand the Live version prefered becuase it's clean and ready to go very little clouding when retro fit. Dry will work too if your really looking to cut costs but expect it to be more cloudy. SalwaterEmpire usually carries it.

Right now I have my vortech quite high on the left side (approximately 4-5" from the water level and when it kicks up to 100% the undertoe pulls sand from 30" - 36" away off the sand bed and sucks it into the water column! I need bigger sand grains! Lol.

No matter what size sand you go(except curshed corals), if you turn MP40 to 100% in 75gal tank, it will stir the sand.
you will see only little difference since you are going little larger grain.

just a thought. since I have tried tried MP40's on 220 gal.

Ha I know I already got your vote DG, looking for others to chime in! Lol.

CaribSea.... Ready to go less painfull, less time in cycle.

grain size preference?

simple.... drain the water from the 75 into the 40br.. from the remaining 20 or so g's empty a few more into a couple 5g pails. scoop the old out. siphon the remaining with the water. pour in the new sand, fill up the tank with old live water. top off with fresh saltwater.
the corals will be ok out water for a couple of hours at ambient room temp unless you keep your plac real freezing or real hoat.

what would this world be without options... :gay1:

oh btw... i tried the siphon method many suns ago.... unless you're nimble with your feet and quick with your hands... that 75 will vanish before the sand is even out....

I figured that would be the cause, that's why I will be doing my normal water changes this way by siphoning out the old sand w/ water. Once at least 1/2 the old sand is out I will start adding new sand.

Just ordered 60lbs of Tropic Eden Reeflakes. Should be here Thursday so tonight I will start siphoning out Sugar sand little by little throughout the next couple weeks!

Anyone have any bright ideas on how to collect the sand while siphoning it out with the water? Obviously i'm going to have way more water than sand, and dont go say pick up a big stock tub, I would like to just use 5g buckets (somehow).

25x 5g buckets and keep doing this :bump1: to the last one that is filled and use a empty one

well if you dont want to use a stock tub and considering your gf is pretty ok with your hobby.. you could use the bath tub...lol

That'd be quite the long siphon hose ha. I'm more looking for a nifty way to separate the sand and water coming out of the siphon.

get a rubbermaid type container in which you can set a bucket; start the siphon and let the sand settle in the bucket. the water will overflow the bucket into the container... at some point there should be enough sand in the bucket and very little in the container. depending on how much sand you have you will need 2-3 buckets to hold the sand. key is the turbulence in the bucket is minimized so the sand has a chance to settle

if the container is getting full.. you could move the water to other buckets using a pump....sound like a plan yet?

Now that is what I am talking about Taklu!! Great idea, i'm off to get a rubbermaid tub.. + rep :)

I agree with Taklu here completely. Easiest and safest way is to remove all rock and live stock into empty tank or buckets filled with water from your tank. You do not need to keep all your old water...perform a water change at at the same time. When your tank is empty except sand, remove the sand and then wipe or rinse out tank. Add new substrate, original water, rock and live stock back into tank. I just did this when I had to move my tank 700miles. I did not want to disturb the sand bed, which was 1-2" deep, becuase I had a partial tank crash after stirring up my 1-2" deep sand bed previously when trying to vacuum clean it. So, when I moved my tank, I took no chances and did not stir up the sand bed nor try to wash and reuse it. I saved 50% old water and filled the tank the rest of the way up with newly prepared saltwater.

IN this case its ok to leave the live rock/corals in there... just the fish would be a matter of concern.. but he is siphoning so it *should* all be good as the gunk is going out.

but a good point... reusing the water if siphoning .. do a water quality check to make the sand did not bring the demons to life
