Well with the swap today I'll be getting 2 Red Mangroves and then the 3 year long process of growing them will commence!

The Idea behind this is to replicate a Lagoon type environment. With the help of a few online sources I now know how I am going to go about this.

I will start off with just the 2 Mangroves and will then add a PVC overflow with a 10g sump which will also be filled with mangroves (except these I will just stick in the substrate rather than getting air-roots on them). Currently don't have time to get too into detail as I'm getting stuff ready for the swap.

Sadly I can't clean down the rocks because of all the snails on it :swear:

Those little white snails...phft, I have so many in my tank but they just go away during the day...back to their holes. I wouldn't worry about them too much.

I have a drillbit and a bulk head you could have/use... all you need is an overflow and 1/2 hour to drill it... you can do it while the tank is full, I did with my 26 gallon bowfront... you just need two people to do it (one to drill one to spray water)

Too expensive? perhaps, I can see how it is slightly more expensive

too time consuming? Highly doubt it is as much time as a getting it drilled. No risk of losing the life on your live rock if you just put it in a bucket. Besides, wouldn't a HOB overflow require a pump? AKA, another thing you have to rely on to not break. Why do you want a sump now anyways? Isn't the point to have this nutrient rich?

Let me start off with saying that that sounds quite tempting mn reefer. If you could PM me the details on how to go about doing it with a full tank I'd take it into consideration.

Also the point of the sump is to ALLOW this to be nutrient rich. Through reading an article online, I discovered that I could naturally replicate the micro-fauna and look of the Mangroves by just letting the leaves fall off into the water. Now I can't do this safely when I just have a few Mangroves in the display (remember, I'm going for air-roots in my Display which takes 3+ years as opposed to the sump where I'm just sticking them in the substrate).

Now the sump will be packed full of Macro-Algae and Mangroves and a DSB to allow for natural filtration for the tank. This will be a long process as it will require a lot of Mangroves (1/gallon = 30g = 30 mangroves) and 1-2 years to allow them to get older and more effective at filtering.

The goal is to eventually retire the Canister Filter and HOB fuge so that I have a High Nutrient tank which, according to the article, is great for Mandarins.

I will think about the drilling, but not until I know everything and I need and everything I was to do printed out onto a list and made into a Neon Sign to put in my room.

Do you have a sump? I had a 10 gallon at the swap today with fittings, drains and shut off valves, still got it!

Mangrove looks good in your tank. When they are in seawater, it is recommended to mist the leaves daily to get rid of any salt that it tries to excrease through its leaves. They will also store salts in their older leaves as they turn brown and fall off. I don't know that I would let the leaves fall into the water and decompose. If you do that you will only be adding the nutrients that it removed back into the tank. Where is the other mangrove that you picked up today? I only see the one that you got from me.

FragtasticReef forgot his :/

And that's the point. The leaves allow natural batterie colonies to form and release tannins giving it the natural tea color. I could go more in depth but I'm on my iPhone atm

Just found this video on Youtube. I think this is kind of what I'm looking for (not exactly though), hopefully my Eco-System comes with the Ambient Music also :)
