TM Bio-actif vs Pro Reef (1 Viewer)

I was considering switching to Bio-actif a while back and I read an older reefcentral thread just about Bio-actif when it was first making its way to the US. It contains organics, which people were saying is essentially a form of carbon dosing, but one that you aren't able to control the dose of like you can with other carbon dosing regimens.

I decided at the time not to switch to Bio-actif because I do not run a skimmer and when carbon dosing you really want a good skimmer to export the nutrients from what I understand.

I think TM Bio is Pro-Reef plus the Bio-Actif stuff. No level/chemical change, just the addition of the Bio-Actif stuff.

PS I gave up on TM Bio Actif, too crazy of levels in the mix. DKH coming up at 4.5.

I actually preferred the Pro-Reef to the Bio-Actif.
The Pro Reef seemed to mix much faster, and cleaner. I didn't have enough corals to justify adding any supplements, so I really had no use for the Bio. To add insult to injury, I actually got a bad bucket of the BioActif once. It left a horrible coating all over everything in my mixing tank. After every water change, I had to clean out my 20g aquarium I use for mixing. The first bucket didn't make any of this mess.

I've been using this stuff for more than year or two. I love it. corals seem happier more open and my sps have crazy polyp extention. Not sure whats in it but I noticed right away when I changed to the stuff my corals liked something in it vs my old salt. It also smells like real sea water and mixes cleaner than any other salt I've ever used.

I just switched over to the stuff this weekend on the advice of very experienced and wise reefer. I did notice that mixed it registered alk of 9.6, which is a bit high for my taste.

what stuff the pro reef or bio-actif?

It's not just you, I've had that problem all along, thought it was just me. I've got a bucket of Red Sea up next, will see how that goes.

I personally never considered the bio-actif. TM Pro was expensive enough and adding any carbon type to my system would be counter productive for my setup.

I went through 7 200g buckets of TM Pro before I switched back to Instant Ocean. All 7 mixed completely clear with no residue whatsoever. Never once had to wipe down the mixing reservoir. However for me and the amount I go through, my tank did great with Instant Ocean and TM so I went back to Instant Ocean and have gone through 2 200g boxes since the switch over. I just couldn't keep up with the $100+ cost to run TM per month ( 1.5 buckets per month ). Tank still looks as good as ever with IO. So for me and my system, no difference. Only difference was it mixes without any residue but I can live with some residue for roughly 1/2 the cost.
