The TCMAS BOD recently held a meeting to vote on some new and exciting changes for TCMAS!

All decisions in this announcement were passed with a majority vote from the BOD and have a targeted launch date of February 1st 2013 unless otherwise noted.

First off we addressed some upcoming benefits TCMAS members will be able to enjoy, we will be starting monthly giveaways that will take place in the members only section. We will also start running quarterly workshops, these workshops will be organized to not only benefit our members with materials to improve their husbandry but also to help us better understand different aspects of our wonderful hobby. The workshops will be announced in the members only section and only available to members on an RSVP nature as TCMAS will be providing the materials for our members to participate in the workshops. Official start dates for the workshops and giveaways will be announced soon so keep your eyes out for them. Items available in the giveaways will vary and change all the time, also the method in which these items are won will vary as well… we plan to have fun with this one.

We decided to revisit the classifieds issue that has been a hot topic for the current, and past BOD. We decided to close off the “Open Access” classifieds sections, this will result in only the current “members only” classifieds section being available which will then be relabeled removing the “members only” tag as these will be the only classifieds available going forward. This decision was made based on a motion that was voted on by the members at a Business Meeting.

There have been numerous requests, past and present, to find alternative means to become a part of TCMAS other than our current means outlined in the by-laws. There have also been numerous reportings of people showing up to meetings and simply signing in and leaving. The goal of the meetings is to be able to share our experiences with each other and learn from each other, at the same time the club has grown to be a strong community of reef enthusiasts and small meetings are not always practical, especially with social media and our forum as a big part of our lives. There will be no changes to the current method of obtaining membership via meeting attendance BUT we will be adding an alternative option to utilize.

To become a part of TCMAS without having the complete benefits of a full membership we will offer the option to become a TCMAS Supporter. This will be a paid option at the cost of $30 yearly or $50 for 2 years. If you choose this option this will include most but not all of the benefits of a full membership. Once this option is utilized, the yearly or bi yearly cost is non refundable regardless of club event or meeting attendance afterwards.

We have also decided to limit the classifieds access in the following manner, members, lifetime members and supporters will be able to view all classifieds sections and threads. In order to post in the classifieds section the posting parties will need to have a minimum of 50 posts on our forums. If new members are looking to purchase items from the classifieds section but have not reached the 50 post mark then they are more than welcome to send the selling party a PM regarding their interest.

An outline of the benefits members, lifetime members and supporters will be able to enjoy now and in the very near future are outlined as follows:
Members, Lifetime Members, and TCMAS Supporters will have the following benefits:

• Participate in monthly raffles and give-aways
• Free admission to workshops
• Free table at our expo's
• Certain additional options on the new forum which we will launch at the same time we implement the changes.
• A free entry in our “Yellow Pages” (A new directory - launched with the re-designed forum) This is for members to advertise any non-reef related business or services that they offer.
• Access to the classifieds. You will be able to see the sales and contact the seller however, if you want to post a for sale/wanting to buy thread you need a minimum post count of 50.

Member and Lifetime Member exclusive benefits include:

• Voting rights at business meetings as outlined in the bylaws

Early January 2013:

A thread will be opened for the upcoming elections
The elections, business meeting, and speaker’s event are being planned for the same day

Elections for the following positions will be open:
• President, currently held by Michael (Maxreefer)
• Treasurer, currently held by Angie (Acharpenter)
• Director, currently held by John (Patent)

Once the thread is opened members will be able to nominate themselves for these positions.

Elections for these positions and the 2013 Business Meeting will be held in April 2013.

Will workshops count for membership?

I have looked at some of the meetings info, but many seem to be a little get together and the only thing relevant to reefing is the host's tank. Maybe I'm wrong, but frankly, if I am not learning something (workshop), trading, buying, or making fish food. (or if I really wanted to see someone's setup) I have no interest in going.

Plus the chance of meeting others also in the hobby and talking reef BS with like minded people. For me its been a chance to point at someones tank and say what do you think? now imagine doing that on the forum.. can't you see I am pointing there? :) I don't go to all meetings but I have been to a couple of meetings where I spent more time talking to the host and others after a brief peek at the tank.. mainly because the ones crowding the tank wouldn't budge.

IMO worth it to go, but now there are more options,
you can pick from cost of gas + talking to smelly guys with sea odor or paying the membership and talking via the keyboard :agree:

Generally people catch up with each other, talk about their own tanks, chat about the host's set up, etc. However, the host can choose to keep a theme within the meeting like David Grigor did a rock drilling presentation at one of his meetings. If you go wanting to learn something, ask questions and discuss them with fellow members to get their opinions.

Excellent work! Thank you for taking into consideration what some of us have wanted all along and making it happen.

This is good for those of us that live 2 hours plus from most of the meetings. However you say "most but not all of the benefits". What would be included in the full membership opposed to the supporter?

Voting rights at business meetings as outlined in the bylaws are not included in the Supporter option. This is the only difference.

Workshops sound like a very positive addition. Can't wait to see the schedule/line up. Great new ideas, looking forward to the changes. And thanks for all the hard work and service to the hobby!!!!

One must "know" someone before hand to "catch-up" and this is where the problem was for me, and probably for all newbies, when I went to my first meeting.

I think something a tad more formal should be incorporated into the open-house meetings as I like to call them. But I can't quite find a good option for that. Thus, why I have never mentioned it before. I did like the around the room introductions that are done at some meetings though, something along the lines of that would be great for ALL open houses.

I like most of the new language, I am extremely busy with work and a young family and don't really want to sacrifice my time driving one way to a meeting in the North Metro. I think I supported the idea of a financial contribution to become a member in the past. My only beef...by simply being a "supporter" you earn no voice to vote? If you choose to financially support the club I think you should have the right to vote too. I stopped viewing the forum for a while due to all of the jr. high drama that was taking place. That seems to have been resolved, which is great. However, I think membership should follow the old saying, "In for a penny, in for a pound". I'm not interested in buying something (ie, membership) without enjoying all benefits.

Please believe I am not trying to open a can of worms...just my $0.02.

This is something that would require a change to the bylaws and this change can only be done at a Business Meeting

Have been lurking on this site for several year as I kicked arund doing a reef setup...which I'm finally starting to do. Would like to do a few meetings a year. But being visually impaired and not able to drive, have been watching for east metro meeting, which are few and far betwen. My wfie doesn't have the same reef interest so have been relunctant in asking her to drive me to a west metro meeting.

Use to be a member of the MN Water Garden Society. With large membership in the west metro, bulk of meetings and pond tour sites were in the west metro because it was conveinent. Unfortunatly, it was hard to increase east metro membership. So maybe with this new policy, more paying east metro members will come on board which could lead to a few more east metro meetings in the future.
.

So given my situation, the "paying" member options is a good alternative. But the $30/year compared to $0 for attending a meeting seeem like a faily wide gap, especially if a "paying" member become real active in the forums in asking/sharing info. But ultimately it's my choice to either make the effor to atten meetings or just pay the dues.

I have no problem paying the fee to be a member, but I think If i were to pay that it should be a lifetime membership, and not only a year or 2.

The $30 a year doesn't seem completely out of reason. I pay $10 a year for my SD membership as that's where I moved here from. Running the site alone can be costly and this site compared to the SD one is much larger with way more members. I'll be interested to see what the raffles and give-aways are as well. Our SD site had discounts to paid members at local shops as well. I'm very new here so I'm not sure but do you guys offer the same discounts at LFS or something in the works?
