Mangrove 20g (1 Viewer)

The bottom one is most likely a pagoda cup

If it came from SWE in the frag tanks on the far left side of the store. I know who traded them ( not me ) and where they came from.

Pagoda is a good guess based on the limited pic but it's a turbinaria. Looks green because of the lighting it's been under but will likely turn more yellow than green.

Still Mangroves, but a lot more "cleaner" now. As in no more chaeto sprouting from the substrate, no more massive chaeto ball taking up half the tank etc etc. Even though this will be a pretty difficult endeavor considering how much of a pain it is to get rid of chaeto :brick:.

Also most of the mangroves are dead or dying and I don't know what is going wrong with them. . .

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the issue with the mangroves that there aren't enough nutrients? I suppose you mean cleaner in terms of looks, not nutrient levels.

yes, so does anyone know of a good way to exterminate chaeto? (besides cherry picking which I'm already doing).

Luckily I'm already helping add some nutrients by having a Starry Blenny and removing the chaeto. I'm hoping with my x-mas money to create a sump which I'll put the mangroves in to try out "natural filtration", but until then I added back the canister filter.

Is the chaeto just attached to the sand, or the rocks too? Either way, I'd probably rinse the sand and scrub the rocks in old tank water from water changes.

Don't know that lack of nutrients is what is wrong. What are your nitrates and phosphates in the tank? Mangroves seem to grow like citrus in that they have periods of growth followed by periods of inactivity in growth. nutrients might be low because your plants are removing nutrients. As long as you are feeding something to the tank, you have a source of nitrates and phosphates. Maybe not enough for optimum growth, but you have some. The water around mangrove swamps are low in nutrients too, but they still grow slowly. It may be that your mangroves were not adjusted slowly to your conditions (salinity) and that will usually cause slow death. If that one you got from me is still doing well (and that one was under marine salinity) then I suspect the problem may be with the salinity levels the others had been growing in. Mangroves, like most plants do no grow well in winter with the shorter day light period and cooler temps. Plants just seem to know the season and grow accordingly. Mine have all but stopped growing entirely for the winter, but will begin again in spring. Don't give up yet.

+1, don't quit! It's a good learning experience :book2:

I having given up yet! Mostly because of those dang snails. They just love those Mangroves too much, that they'd be heart-broken if I got rid of them now :(

Even the Starry Blenny will occasionally perch on the Mangroves :gay1:

If these ones all die then I'll just guy some more. I have a new vision in my head now of having a "back splash" of Mangroves!

:eek2: I just did a water change, vacuuming like 1/4th the substrate (front) and this tank already looks oodles and oodles better than it did before!

I'm now ready for my corals I'm getting from General0! :kackle:

The General0 20g

I am re-naming this the "The General0 20g". The generosity of General is astounding!

I was selling my LED light fixture for only $20 and he saved me from a potentially terrible deal. I honestly don't know if you even wanted the LEDs but just wanted to make sure I didn't make a terrible mistake, you PM'd me so fast that no one else could even buy it before hand. Today I went to Cliff's house expecting either $20 and 4-5 frags or just a bunch of frags. When I got there he was nice, outgoing and impressed my mom. After about an hour at his house I had accumulated 17 frags, some flame algae and a colony of Cloves along with a great conversation to top it off. Then on my way home I get a call saying I had forgotten my $20. . . he even paid me the $20! (along with giving me my hat which I had forgotten ). I can not thank Cliff enough and is by far the best man I've met! If you're reading this Cliff I would like to thank you for all the kindness and frags today. :agree: :agree: :agree: :agree:

Hey no problem! You paid too much money for that light to give it away for 20.00 dollars and I have a project it will work great for. Nice to put a face to the screen name and it was nice to meet your mom and you and chat with the two of you! Good luck with the corals and if you have any questions on their care just let me know and I'll try to help answer them.

I told you you would leave with a tank full btw ;-)

I thought you were exaggerating that many! Thanks again, but now you're going to have to help me with the names of all of these! Was great to meet you too and you were the first one to really impress my mom. Glad to know such great folks live so close!

I'm going to do everything I can to make sure these frags all stay alive!

Look at all dem corals! Re-arranged the rockwork too. I'm lovin' it.

Anyone got tips on how to attach this guy? I've tried over and over and he keeps tipping over.

Tank looks so much better, keep it up!

What is the new light fixture you got?

4 bulb 24" fixture with 2-10k daylights 24w each and 2-actinics 24w each and 4 modules for moonlight LEDs. All for only $40 too!

Does anyone know if I should dose this tank? I got a lot of corals in it now and most are SPS. Or would WCs be enough? I got a test kit for Alkalinity and Caronate Hardness but not for calcium.
