270g Starphire build thread (pic intensive) (1 Viewer)

Looking great Morty. Been following the thread for some time now. I really appreciate the patience you are observing with stocking it.

Thanks!

I'm really wanting to add a few tangs. I'd like to get my purple tang out of the 'fuge, so I can put some cheato in there for pod production/hair algae competition. Plus I think the tangs would finish off the last of the hair algae in the display. It would be great if they were fairly unique, less common species. Any suggestions of LFSs that may be worth a visit after xmas? Or reliable suppliers?

SWE should be opening then. I like the chevron tang.

I went with a Powder Brown this time around. He is brilliantly colored, and has excellent temperment.

Years ago I had a powder brown, and later had a chevron, liked them both (but I think the brown was a cyanide fish because it didn't survive long). The chevron lived a long time, and I remember its juvenille colors faded over time (its purple went away). However then I switched foods and the purple came back, but mainly in its tail. Still a good suggestion.

Is it the powder browns or powder blues that have the reptutation of not being able to fight ich off very well?

Would a kole tang fight with a PB or chevron? I know they're all the bristle-tooth variety of tangs...

Powder blue will usually show ich, resist the urge to take it out of the tank if it is eating. I know Eric Z has one that got the usual ich, but instead of pulling it from the tank he left it in, and it has survived. Everyone I know, including myself who has got a powder blue tang had the tang get ich and then pulled the tang. It seems that pulling the tang out of the tank produces just enough stress to suppress the immune system of the tang and it dies. I think the key to powder blues is to understand that they will always show signs of ich, always have it, and if you give it the most stress free tank you can you may make it. JME.

Thanks!

If you have tangs that will eat hair algae they are worth their weight in gold. Never let them go.

My Powder Brown has never showed any signs of ich. I am sure that it would get along with a Kole.

Thanks for the tips on the tangs! :) I purchased a kole tang at OD the other day, he seems to be liking his new home so far (but seems pretty preoccupied with his own reflection.)

I finally moved some of the frags I had in QT into the display, here are a few photos etc.

This is a millepora I got from David G.:

And here is an acro I picked up from Dirk at the meeting in Red Wing:

This is porites I also got from Dirk:

It has a worm living in it, as well as a few small barnacles. Here is a close-up of the worm:

This is an acro I got at OD several weeks ago:

And it came with an acro crab hitchhiker. Here's a closer pic:

This is another algae that has been slowly growing in one spot of the rock -- I think it's sargassum weed.

There are some other frags I added as well, but they're not in the best spots to get good photos. Once I put them in their final places I'll post a few more...

i also have the kole and he is infatuated with his own reflection, its funny watching the sailfin stareing at himself and trying to fight himself

Thanks!

I just got the last of the tangs I wanted to add today from FSLA. They sent me a desjardini and a powder blue. I ordered both as 'medium' fish, but the PB was a very large medium (bigger than my purple), and the des was a very small medium (smaller than the kole). I finally moved the purple out of the fuge, and let the purple, PB and des join the kole in the display at the same time, with me being a little bit worried. But I couldn't be happier. Everyone is getting along as good as could be hoped for, picking algae off the rocks, and the only aggression is the purple and PB sometimes pausing with a little fin flare when they pass each other just to show they won't back down if pushed. I'm not so sure the dynamic would be the same if it were just the purple and PB, having the other two smaller tangs helps diffuse things. Now just to hope any ich outbreak remains minor.
