So I have had a peacock mantis shrimp for a while in a 30 gallon reef tank. I just bought a 60 gallon tank to upgrade to. I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to put a snowflake eel in with a mantis shrimp. Any comments?

bad idea

they are both bottom dwelling creatures, they will constantly fight until one of them kills and eats the other.

if the mantis doesnt kill the eel, the eel will get the mantis when it molts.

Okay, would a mantis get along with any other type of eel?

If anything any other Eel would be worse cause it would either be smaller making it easy prey for the Mantis or it would be larger and could eat the mantis more easily.

I wouldn't risk it , but maybe making your rock work 2 separate islands on opposite sides of the tank would reduce fighting.

One of the two will eat the other at some point. There is no reason to risk the life of either animal.

Any eels big enough to avoid being harmed by the mantis will be big enough to eat the mantis. Any eels small enough to not make a meal of the shrimp will surely be injured or killed by the mantis.

okay, i get it l.o.l (no stupid animation)

Do you think it would be a bad to host some kind of octopus with the mantis? (I am aware of their escape tactics, I'm just brainstorming new ideas for this new tank)

Nevermind, that was a dumb question

if you want the mantis, build the tank for the mantis. start thinking macro algae, or look into corals that can be kept with it... not sure about corals. only way you will safely house something with a mantis is if you install some acrylic diving the tank in 2.

if you want a community tank, you need to build one without the mantis on your stock list, plain and simple.

no, I am upgrading the 30 to a 60. I'm not keeping the 30
