Chris' Elos 160 (1 Viewer)

I was meaning to ask you about these fish at the expo, but we got busy.
Very striking coloration on that male, for sure.
If you think they're too big, I know of a tank that they would look great in!

How are you liking your Gyre pump after a few weeks?

Still liking it a lot. I think my sand bed has been turned over a dozen times as I mess with it. With typical powerheads you can restrict the strong flow to the upper water column, but this is all or nothing when it's mounted vertically. The fish definitely enjoy the flow, especially the Powder Blue. I did dismount the Vortechs for a day and it seemed to do okay on its own, (and the tank looks so clean with bare sides!) but as they have battery backups they'll stay on.

Hmmmmmmm........that's pretty cool. Perhaps you guys should consider painting the walls black then take this pic again? NOW THAT would be interesting ; )

Would probably take a little photoshop work but if Chris took a bunch of photos with the infrared filter on and median merged them it would create a single photo without any fish and a black background. Then a second photo in the same spot without the filter. This would create the color photo and all the fish. A masking layer for only the fish and corals (and beautiful sand that everyone seems to be hatin' on lately) would make an interesting composition.
 
I think Chris was mimicking the look of Peter Lik's latest photograph.
If he can do it just right, he may be able to cash in BIG TIME!!!

It is a cool shot.
And Eric's suggestion of masking two (or more) layered photos would look spectacular also.
Imagine a close up shot of the Candy Basslet against a burned/grunged B&W background. :eek:

This one is just a black and white conversion of a color shot where the yellows are mapped to high grayscale values and the blues to darker values. It does remind me of an infrared. That's really interesting about the median filter, I've never used it that way before. Sounds like a time saver.

I wish! That Antelope Canyon shot isn't a unique photo, really.. I'd like to know who that sold to because do I have a steal of a deal for them ;)
 
Chris, I skimmed through the thread and apologize if you already touched on this. What type of sand is that, what do you have for a cuc, and how do you keep it clean?

I don't think it's been mentioned anywhere- I used about a dozen bags of CaribSea's Fiji Pink. I keep it clean with lots of flow and I siphon the detritus during water changes in places where in builds up. The sand particle size is pretty small so I inadvertently remove some of it. I have a bucket of unused Fiji Pink and I pour in a few cups once in awhile to replace what's been siphoned. Fine sand beds are a lot easier to keep clean if you treat sand like a consumable; just like salt or some other additive. I've been going through just a bag per year.

This is the clean up crew currently:

  • 20- Trochus Snails
  • 6- Scarlet Reef Hermit Crabs
  • 4- Blue Legged Hermit Crabs
  • 5- Emerald Crabs (Likely temporarily, for some bubble algae)
  • 3- Nassarius Snails
  • 1- Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

I'll look for my Rob Zombie CD.

I actually started with dual 200w NeoTherms and they stopped working after about 6 months because of a manufacturing defect. I replaced them with a single Eheim Jäger while they were replaced under warranty. I don't believe they ever fixed the actual problem, so they sent me three smaller models as replacements.

The slim form-factor, sturdiness, temperature accuracy, and LED feedback make them one of my favorite heaters. There's a bit of fear-hype with these because of the early defects but the smaller models have a good track record- as good as heaters get, anyway. They are also warrantied for a full three years.
 
Please please please give us an update of the dos. It is such a large investment for 2 pumps and want to understand is it worth the 350.

I plan on pulling the BRS pumps and installing this weekend, will let you know how it compares.
