Ok so here is where I'm at I'm upgrading from my 72bf and going to a 180. I have most of the stuff I need except for a skimmer and probably more rock and a sand bed. I would like to use ozone and probably will go with avast for the ozone factor. I like the looks of the aquamaxx but they haven't been around for a long time. I'm not crazy about the price on the Octopus skimmers ( or even which one to really go for, some have mentioned a sro 3000)to me the Octo keep reusing the numbers with a different abbreviation and it gets confusing to me. Anyone out there using the aquamaxx co-2? I'm open to any thoughts suggestions. If I have posted this in the wrong area please relocate. I don't think this is a advanced topic.

Octopus are pretty standard and good skimmers, different abbreviations usually refer to some different tech they put in, classics are your standard cylinder skimmer, sss= super space saver (pump inside the cylinder) regal/elite different shaped cylinders with dc pumps. Id check on the sro 3000 as they have been harder for me to find new from suppliers (i think they were retired)

I havnt set up or used an aquamaxx skimmer, i just thought i would give some octopus info.

I have a reef octopus (xs160), running strong for 3 years with minimal maintenance. I wouldn't hesitate to go with another. I would not go with a SSS model or anything with the pump inside the body, just reduces dwell/contact time. Unless of course you dont have room for one with the pump outseide the body. I think the new "classic" line has some pretty good deals. Let me know if you want a hand with anything since I live in EC and would't mind checking it out.

If you are considering an Aquamaxx, you should look at JNS. They are the exact same skimmer as Aquamaxx, but cost less. I can't say I'd go with either, however I know everyone has a budget.

Just about everyone in the club has or had an Octopus skimmer, so that says a lot about them. They are so popular that our own sponsor, Fragtastic Reef, owns the domain www.reefoctopusskimmers.com If they are out of your budget, I imagine a used one would be easy enough to find. As far as which one to get, I agree with what has been posted - pump on the outside for more dwell unless space is an issue. I would look at a 200mm skimmer for a 180 gallon tank

I know they have been very popular but why do people switch except to experiment or what? I have heard of a few others switching to the aquamaxx and I guess that's why I was looking at that and the price. I do appreciate the feedback I have received here.

Not familiar with JNS are they a nock off they look the same?
I see now they are also by aquamaxx thanks

Upgrading, upsizing, down sizing, leaving the hobby, and personal preference are probably reasons people switch around. I don't quite get the ratings of the aquamaxx, if you go with one, you might be happier with an 8" one. A 6" skimmer on a 180 sounds a little small depending on what you want to do.
