So I have a euro reef skimmer. works great. 15 years old but the problem is it sounds like a jet plane landing. are the new skimmers better, less noisy or silent? is it worth the 300-500$ for a new skimmer? the system is all together. sump under tank and in the living room. skimmer on- tv volumn at 21. skimmer off tv volumn at 12.

I just picked up a used vertex int-180 and it is dead silent. My reef octopus 110 is louder and it is newer but not by much mostly I can hear it suck in air form the "silencer"... do you have a silencer on your air intake? If not you can silence your output tub by extending it and putting a cap on it. Drill a hole in the side near the top and insert a 90 degree elbow fitting for you air line.. This should make it virtually silent minus any pump noise you may have... You can see it in the photo I got from the guy I bought mine from...

Go with a Reef octopus Regal or Elite skimmer with the DC pumps and they are super quiet.

BRS carries the Skimz products including that one.

I'm not endorsing it, just saying where you could buy it :)

I love my Vertex the most but my Reef Octopus has been a quality product. I have not heard anything but good things from owners of the Skimz brand products. They get good reviews. Not that I am saying you should get one just an option :) Is there nothing you can do to the skimmer you have now to try and quiet it down? maybe get a new pump for cheaper than a whole new skimmer?

I am going to use a reef octopus Regal 200INT w/ DC3500 pump for my 180 its super quiet as stated above, uses very little in the way of electricity, also has various speed controls including a feed setting.

I used to sell Skimz brand and they are junk. Unless they improved their pumps in the last year or so (don't believe they have). I sold Skimz skimmers and during that time had nothing but issues and stopped selling them. The pumps or impellers would go bad and was VERY difficult to get replacements sent out or would end up waiting weeks to months to get them.

Vertex are good skimmers however I have had alot of QC issues (over 50%) with their Alpha skimmers, and some damaged Omega's also. They just do not package their skimmers very well so it causes issues, and had some gluing issues on the Alpha skimmers a while back which caused a huge mess.

The Reef Octopus Prime skimmers are awesome and better in price and warranty than the Omega, only they are not a space saver model. The Regal and Elite's are probably some of the best skimmers and most reliable in the market right now. I have sold 100's of them and never had an issue with any of them.

That is really good to know! Thanks for the information.

That is just from my experience of selling them of course. Everyone will have a different one. I am sure some love theirs, while others had nothing but problems. Every company I feel has advantages, its just personally what you want to spend and are comfortable with. We specialize in skimmers probably the most on items we sell, and Reef Octopus is probably my favorite since I can usually take care of my customers with warranty and parts.

I'm partial to Vertex, particularly the Omega line of skimmers

Are you using that one yet? Or is it still in the box? ;)

To the OP...
My last two skimmer have bee Reef Octopus skimmers and I have had no real issues with them. Like 'em a lot!

well sitting at work on a slow day and then my brain functioned remembering gas filters for cars in the 70's. plastic, see through, paper insert. got 2 of them, napa PN 23002 and 23003-$2.56, nice and cheap. put them on the air line and that noise vanished much more than my old air line filter. thinking my next move might be a DC pump. are they built just for skimmers. guess I'm asking is it a plug and play? or do I need a different empeller? quiet has become my new obsession.

DC skimmer pumps have the impeller and everything with them, however they might not adapt to your current skimmer body and may have to be retrofitted.

Just put a psk 1000 on a euroreef rs180, super easy installation and pump is very quiet, still dialing it in, but the noise is much better.
Started with a genx 4100, crazy loud, then psk2500 was much better but started making noise, last pump was installed a week ago,
Not sure if I should have gone with a new skimmer a little smaller neck size for my 120 or not. But for sure the noise is much better with a muffler on the intake
