Chris' Elos 160 (1 Viewer)

After 3 years the Sicce PSK1000 is being retired. It's become way too loud and the vibration just resonates through the whole sump, which doesn't cut it in the living room. I switched the original return to a Reef Octopus and was impressed so I'm going to try the similar RODC 3500S Skimmer model to see how it fairs. At maximum power it's also about 1/3 of the wattage. I don't know how closely air and water rates have to be matched to the skimmer design, but since it's adjustable hopefully there's a sweet spot with this pump.

Update: Well that was worthwhile. The flow-through matches what I had before at 3/5 power, it's inaudible, and it produces a better foam.

Thanks! Lights are about 7" above the water line. They do get wet on occasion but I like the wide angle lenses for shadowing and the lower level keeps the light inside the tank.
 
I am running my hydra 52s about the same height. I have been going through some small changes trying to find the right settings. Seems like your colors "pop" a lot more than mine.

Eventually I'll get them where I want them. Do you know what the kelvin spectrums you are running throughout the day are?

My colors didn't come out for quite awhile either. Increasing the fish load did a lot for my colors. Kelvin is always changing, but throughout the day the main points are roughly 20,000K → 13,000K → 20,000K.

Thanks for the information! I have adjusted my lighting to use 14000, 10000, 14000. I'm gonna run it for 2-3 months, and see what I get.
 
do you have any Ignitus Anthias? i see they are on the smaller side. thinking of trying to get a trio.


edit: found your stock list, looks like you have 2.

Yep, one male and a female. It's a smaller anthias, and very open water. The juveniles look very similar to Dispar, but more of a peach color than orange and develop a really nice red dorsal fin. They are probably the most peaceful anthias I keep, maybe tied with Purple Queens.

 
I submit to you proof that all the fancy schmancy photos Chris posts are IN FACT Photoshop'd!!! I call fraud; if I hadn't seen his tank first hand to know they are not I would swear they are. It's a fraud of a fraud. Yes, it's a Monday deal with the confusion as I have to deal with this line of thinking every day.

Only one leucozonus made it through quarantine. The male developed a weird bloating issue and stopped eating. Female does great in the group. I might add another eventually if they are available at the right time.

Nuptial color of the male Cooper's anthias. I can't get proper color because he will only do this at a certain time of the evening when the lighting is heavy blue. The body loses all of the red color except for a vertical red blotch and the caudal and pelvic fins. Normal coloration is here.

 
Im amazed at how crisp the photos are of the fish. I try even at really fast shutter speeds and I still get smeary scales. Yours a sharp with tiny flecks of detail. Do I do the tank upgrade or get a new camera... ARG!!

I don't know how soon you wanted to try the white bar again but NYAquatic just posted today or yesterday that they had 3 males and 3 females

I'm kind of hesitant since we've got a vacation planned this month, I'll have to wait until March at least. I've ordered from NYAquatic twice and each box had a bag floater. Maybe just a fluke, but I hope that they become available elsewhere.

Here are the settings for each shot. The Canon still does pretty well considering I got it in 2008. It does shows its age with ISO performance and I think that more action shots would be possible if I could shoot at 3200. I eagerly await a 5D Mark 4.

I'm seriously thinking that I need to get my own lens; and soon! A 3D printer can wait.

That leucozonus is amazing; too bad the other's didn't make it.
It does seem that the variety of available anthias species has been growing over the past few months. I would expect that it means these newer species may become available more often now due to the demand for them.
