So I am taking my 55 gallon sump out of my stand because it is way too much of a hassle to get in there and do work and what not considering my stand is shorted than I expected. I have a 180 display and in the stand I have about 22"-24" of height. Also the tank is already filled so I'm going to have to squeeze it out the 18" doorway from the stand, so my question is, what size sump should I put in now for anyone that has shorter than usual stands? And where is the best place (in your opinion) to but already baffled and setup sumps?

What capacity are you looking for? Are you looking to increase tank volume or just enough space for equipment, etc.?

Just enough space for equipment and to maneuver around in my stand without having to snake my arm. Also I have to make a little room for my ATO 5 gallon jug.

Also down the line I would like to have room for dosing as well. But that's down the road. I just don't want to add any fish or coral to my tank until I get this sump situation figured out.

So if size is a limitation because of the door opening, just exactly how do you plan to get the 55g out ? Drain the water and then just smash the glass and clean it up ? There is a 40g Long too, I believe is the same as 33g just 48" long instead. Trouble you might run into going with a smaller sized sump becuase of door opening is will it hold enough water to keep from spilling when power is cut ? I personally would never rely solely on a check valve.

Years ago I helped a guy assemble/build an acrylic sump under the tank because it wouldn't fit otherwise. While it can be done and did work, I'd never volunteer ( nor recommend ) something like that again.

While I know you don't want to hear this, I personally would just take my lumps ( chalk it up as a lessen learned ), buy/rent a 150g tub, drain the 180g down to safe level to remove bracing or whatever needed to get the sump out, even if it mean't complete disassemble. You should be able to get this all done in a single day. Again, not fun by I personally would do it right and not settle on sump size just because of the door size.
