Surprise, Another SPS Tank (1 Viewer)

Beautiful 🤩

Why not an internal overflow?

Thanks Shawn!

Quality of life. The external allows me to have a removable weir I can clean (bubble algae and coralline), and it’s quieter and less space to get all full of vermatid snails I can’t clean.

To good of an answer. Try again 😂

Makes sense. Oh if only someone would make a perfect tank so we all would not have to compromise. lol. What ever you do I’m sure will look just as awesome 👏

Wow! That polyp extension is off the charts as well 👌 definitely have things dialed in.

I personally like glass too much too ever go acrylic but understand the concerns for sure. And also agree with external overflow. Much easier to scrape the back glass as well and frees up a little more space.

IMG_7405.jpeg5 pounds of rubble rock arrived from TBS. Not the most beautiful but full of life and biodiversity for my frag tank!

Looks awesome! Going into display or frag tank?
Frag Tank. I started it with 5lbs of rock from aquabiomics but it’s was pretty crappy and sterile so the tank has been really slow going.

@Varig maybe this will make you feel better haha.

The struggle bus visits every reefer when it comes to plumbing leaks.

I’ve tightened both of these bulkheads once already and they are seeping again. I am just monitoring and cleaning up salt creep. I will eventually need to take action. My wife told me the Derasa clam looks cramped and needs more room 🤗

This further supports why the next tank will be peninsula style with full plumbing access.

I didn’t know which emoji to use :). I think the difference is that is a slow leak, but no worries about breaking off. I’m “worried” that if I broke the molded plastic, it’s just a matter of time before it snaps off.

But yes….stupid leaks. I could get you some 3M Marine 5200. It won’t leak again. But you’ll never get it apart….. :)

IMG_7503.jpegNew toy in action thanks to @Varig!!

Created a littler reservoir for it to draw from that fills from my AWC line as there’s no way I have room for this thing under my stand. Nice part is I’m not taking water from the tank so no impact to salinity.

Hoping to snag a 5L or 20L of HCL 0.1N from work for reagent and I’ll be set!

I’m 100% jealous of being able to pull it from your awc and that you can likely route the waste into the same drain, so you don’t even need container for that. Man…a guy can dream. I’m interested to hear how you like it.

Aww shucks thanks guys 🤗

@Chris Goetz the corals in the frag tank immediately responded better. Perhaps that coincided with adding a skimmer and TBS rock settling in, but I’ll tell myself it’s the halide!

Tanks look great, actually better than great, I'm looking forward to hearing about the KH director experience. How much water does it pull for a test?

Thank you!

80ml. I’ve read that some people even dump the waste back into the tank. It’s basically just the tank water neutralized with acid. I was going to test it with some chemical titrations I have for work to confirm if it would negatively impact tank pH.

@Jonty - For what it's worth I've been running a KHD on two tanks for ~1.5 years. Happy to share any thoughts or answer questions you might have. High level, I'm super happy with it. The technology itself seems pretty simple. And so far the hardware has been very robust (even with my weak routine maintenance habits). For example, it's probably been at least 6 months, maybe closer to a year since I last recalibrated the pH probe in the unit, but my 2x daily readings always line up within 0.5 dkH of my Hanna checker when I compare them. I don't know which to trust exactly, but I'm extremely happy that the results are consistent and don't require super crazy maintenance to maintain that consistency. I think GHL recommends monthly calibration....but ain't nobody got time for that :).

Like Ben, I have mine set to pull 80mL for samples. You can adjust it higher or lower based on your needs. Larger samples lead to more accurate results (so they say) but then also use more reagent as well. On my 14 gallon tank even the 80mL samples will add up over time, causing salinity swings if I'm not careful. I currently mix my ATO water to 6ppt as I've found that seems about right to maintain salinity. BUT as I've been increasing kalkwasser dosing (more uptake due to higher pH), I obviously use less ATO water, so it's causing a little bit of a swing if I don't watch it. As such, I'm thinking about setting up another dosing head to just add 80mL of fresh saltwater ever time it tests and putting my ATO back to straight RODI. It's a bit more messing around (hence why I'm super jealous of Ben's setup tied into his AWC). But I think it will lead to more stable salinity.

Anyway, sorry to hijack your build thread Ben. But if you have any questions Jonathan, just ping me.

Cheers!
